What do you want to do with the 22-250? Barrel burner 40 gr HP at lightning speed or 75-90 gr SMK for long range? I got a 250 last yr with a 26" 1:14 bull barrel. It's fun at the bench, but absolutely beyond worthless as a pickup gun due to the length and size.

Heavy barrels are nice if you're gonna go shoot a bunch. Wear inside increases rapidly as the barrel heats. Bull barrels will allow more shots back to back before cool down, but take much longer to cool. If you're going to shoot sage rats, it's best to take as many irons as you can. Then you can switch between them and keep from burning a single one down.

Personally, I'd go with the lighter barrel and try to maintain self control with round count. Slimmer barrels are so much more handy offhand or rested on the pickup mirror.

Either way, you can't not smile watching things turn to vapor downrange of a 22-250.

Oh and 220 Swift might even put a bigger smile on your face...

Actually for all round hunting of small game up to varmint and deer size --the 243 is a damn good caliber. Cheap enough and popular enough to offer a wide range of bullet options. The handloaders in my neck of the woods love it --

I second the 243 I have a cheap savage I started my kids deer hunting with and I like using it to.

I've decided on the Varmint 22/250 , and the hunter in 300 win mag.

I edited the page to show the 2

I don't think you could go wrong with either of those. Dad has a Ruger Falling block 22-250 that I grew up smacking groundhogs with. The next rifle I buy will be a varmint rig in either 22-250, or 6.5 Creedmore

Well I sucked it up and sent a cheque, figure now`s the time as I may have a mortgage in my future.
He (Ohio discount gun sales of Oklahoma) sent a pic of the Hunter .300. The stocks are all a little different so I wanted to make sure it was a purdy one and boy howdy what a beautiful gun.
The 22/250 have laminated stocks so their all about the same.
The cabbage should be there today so I`ve prolly got a good week before I see em.

Nice looking rifle. Now you gotta cut a similar sized cheque for the optics. ;D

Those Sakos are expensive enough Jabber can get by with cutting a slightly smaller check for the glass ;D Then another few hundred for dies & components and he'll be set.

That is a good looking piece of stainless and wood. What do you plan on taking down with that?
Title: Re: Looking at getting 2 rifles
Post by: jabberwoki on February 05, 2019, 07:14:26 PM
Deer and maybe Elk and definitely   plenty of targets.
As for optics , I`d like to get something that I can use on either the .300 or the 22/250.
Just not sure what that will be. So open to suggestions but must be stainless.
I looked up Zeiss and had an early senior moment :o :-\

Wow Jab! Beautiful rifles. You obviously cut quite a cheque. I be nervous as shit carrying a rifle that nice through the woods.

Leupold is definitely worth considering. Nikon Monarchs are also decent scopes for reasonable money but I don't remember ever seeing one in silver.
Title: Re: Looking at getting 2 rifles

Silver definitely limits your options CONSIDERABLY. Damn do the look nice on a stainless gun though.

Weaver and Nikon both offer some silver scopes. Lots of choices on Amazon.

Would be OK for the win mag but not enough scope for the .22-250 IMO. For that I'd be looking for something parallax adjustable with higher magnification. Personally I'd go cheaper on the win mag and sink some real money into glass for the .22-250. Give me a few minutes then check your PMs ;)

Ditto on Matt's comment. I would never go smaller than a 4x12x40 on a hunting gun anymore. Maybe on a short action I was trying to get light to pack in. Silver is going to limit you on options majorly.

Nightforce is calling that 22's name...

Yeah yeah , I haven't even got the bloody guns yet.

I`m thinking hard about that big Zeiss for the 22.
I`m giving up on the one scope idea.

Check their warranty. Don't want to buy a $600 paperweight or spend that much again on a repair.

This is what spooks me on a used scope.

Yeah that could be a problem with the Zeiss. Germans ain't got the best reputation for warranty service even if the product is covered.

This is what spooks me on a used scope.

You should be good with the better US scopes. Most of them are lifetime transferable warranty. One exception to that is Redfield. Their new owner, Leupold, won't honor the warranty on older scopes.

I'm leaning towards Leupold.
I'm really not comfortable with a used scope bought from afar.
I`ll be contacting them tomorrow about new ones.

I bought a Leupold  scope years ago to go on a hunt. When I put it on to sight it in it fogged up right away. I called Leupold up @ 11:30 am and they had a replacement for me at my house by 2:30 the next day with a prepaid shipping label to send the old one back. You don't get customer service like that anymore. I would also go with a Leupold.

Leopold does not offer silver anymore. Would cost me  $150/$200 extra to have a new one custom made in silver.

Had Levergun leatherworks make me a sling for the .300 of my own design.
The center design is the Finnish symbol for luck, fitting for a hunting iron.
The work Chance does is unbelievable and not that spendy either . He gives you a completion date and he keeps it. He did a sling for my 45/70 and it's just as beautiful.
