It's Elroy's favorite: bar keepers friend. Sprinkle some keepers on a scotchbrite pad hit it with just enough water to make a paste and watch a clean white rod appear in short order. This procedure yields a clean rod with a fresh tooth that performs much better with an open tooth. Try it .....
