Unusual Spark Plug Socket
« on: August 23, 2018, 07:25:19 PM »
I posted this at the old site and it generated a lot of discussion so I thought I'd post it here.

Not sure of era but to me it has the I was made in the 50's feel about it.

Herbrand SPJ-1426 ratcheting spark plug socket. It's for a 13/16 wrench size plug so not a lot of applications anymore.

Ratchet direction switch. This will only ratchet left or right there is no locked position.

3/8 drive or a 3/4 wrench.

Spark plug is held in mechanically by the hex it is pretty secure and easy to get the socket off the plug when done.

I love that socket.

Yours is a far more refined example than my finely patina'd ferrous oxide variant.

Scripted "Pendrick". Still clinging to its foam liner after all this time.

Gotta love Herbrand "Van-Chrome" -- truly a nice piece of tool history

OnS that looks a lot like the Herbrand. Not familiar with Pendrick.

There was a spark plug, no.6 I believe on the 55-56 Chevy where that was required, no room for a ratchet, turned with a wench.   Also on the 57 Oldsmobile.   Never seen a ratcheting one though.

Never seen a ratcheting one either. It is amazing how many Herbrand specialty automotive tools they made.

It surprises me sometimes Herbrand floundered as it did. They made good tools and delved into the specialty area quite a bit.

Quite interesting ratcheting spark plug sockets pictured here.  Guessing no one makes anything like those anymore.  That would sure make them collectible.  In my ventures I may have overlooked these specialized sockets.  Thanks for sharing pictures and info!

This is the only one I've seen in my travels.

On my cars I just use a speeder not even a ratchet at all although on the Explorer I do need a swivel socket.
