This is an Allen socket set from the early 1900's

Most of the early socket sets came in fitted wood boxes and most of them out there are Mossberg.  Thus Allen sets are not too common.  The sockets are typical of the pressed steel ones available at that time.  It is the ratchet that is different, as it is not only 1/2 inch drive, the socket head gimbals within the handle.  Thus one does not have to drive at a 90 degree angle, but can offset about 20 degrees in any direction.  Even today there are no ratchets out there that can be rotated in any direction.  Note the grooves which are the drive teeth.

Now that's something special right there, and it doesn't seem to have a very bulky head either.
