Title: Taking the memory out of a poly air hose
Post by: hickory n Steel on April 11, 2021, 09:22:44 PM
I just bought a cheap 25ft poly hose for the air compressor and it wants to stay coiled up, is there any way to get it to straighten out ?

I bought an expensive Craftsman hose back when Sears was Sears.  After all this time it still has coil memory.  Great hose for in heated buildings or days in the upper 60's.  My only solution is to lay it stretched out on the driveway on a sunny day with a brick on each end & not use it when its cold.
Also, when you coil it back up, use the biggest loops you can and rotate the twist out while doing it.

Poly hose will not easily lose its memory. The only way to relax it to a large degree is to stretch it out in the driveway under tension and use a heat gun to slowly heat the thing up. Hot sunshine alone won't do it.

The next step is to put it on a hose reel. Trying to coil cheap poly hose is like trying to wrestle a python.

I would think a warm day (very warm here in Phx) would allow it to return to its normal straight molded state. If you dont have really warm days, perhaps when the kitchen royalty is not around, perhaps 20 mins on a warm temp in the stove and then outside on the driveway to reset?

I did have a cheap HF hose that I picked up an unused (but new), and in the "relative" cold here in Phx, it just didnt offer the right flexibility I needed. I offloaded it during warmer weather for better examples.

Heck, even recirculating hot water would give it the flexibility it needs unless its just the wrong material to start with.

I guess I'll try stretching it out on the driveway this summer.
If that doesn't work I'm only out $12 , and it should still be useful regardless.

Light it on fire and go get a goodyear or flexzilla hose.

I have one poly hose and I refuse to use it unless its absolutely needed.

Do they make a small say 25ft'er ?
I don't need much for my 6 gallon pancake compressor.
