Pawnie find: Snap-On ratchet

Haven't found much of anything tool-wise at the thrift stores and pawn shops lately. Today a trip to a Good Will netted me a S-O ferret ratchet in 3/8". Frozen tight, but for the price I had to take it. JAFE juice freed it up, now it's in the rotation.

It took a whole lot more than a $1 worth of solvent to clean it out right. I think I got taken!

Hard to see the date code clearly. It looks like the mark for 1940 or possibly 39 which are similar. It also could be a G for 1945 but I think 40 is most likely because the G mark is not as round.

Great score. It's a nice ratchet.

Those are nice little ratchets, you can still get a kit from Snappy and have it running like new.

So far I'm liking it. The handle shape and size is a really good combo for my hand - might just have to keep this one.

Though I may put some heat-shrink tubing on it to increase the grip. It's so smooth from decades of use I'm sure the littlest bit of sweat or oil and it would slide right out of my hand.

Congrats George! It's a classic ratchet, but damn those things are clunky. We're spoiled these days by high/fine tooth count mechanisms; and that's a good thing -=- LOL

Yeah, I count 20 teeth. But some of the older Snappy rebuild kits offered sort of an upgrade to 30 teeth. Guess I should call them and see.

Either way it's a keeper. My smoothest ratchet is an antique Herbrand pearhead, and it's a low tooth count, too. But smooth as glass, so I don't really notice it.

Some Superlube will make a lot of difference in the action and smooth it out.

The ratchet was 20 teeth but the rebuild kits available are 30 so if you need a kit you get 30. If you do get a kit, keep the gear as there are people who want them to keep their ratchets original.

I ended up putting some heat shrink tubing on the handle just to see if it would improve the grip. It did a little.

I may still order the 30 tooth kit for it but for now we'll work it and see how it does.
