show us your cman "block" grinder!
« on: October 11, 2018, 08:34:09 PM »
pretty simple thread. many of us have block grinders. i just found  mine a month ago and cleaned it up a little bit today.

a 1975 model with original paint and new wheels. i did paint the flex boom as i had to replace the light fixture and the gold anodizing didn't quite cut it!

Pretty darn good SK! It's a keeper for sure. So much interest in these grinders over the last decade that if they brought the quality and design back, and charged less than $200 for the darn things, they'd probably sell like "hot cakes"!

it was pretty easy. other than being grungy it was good. yup, it has some parina but it was far too nice for a repaint. it will be user so it got new tires. i replaced the broken lamp holder with one that is switched so i can turn it off when not needed.

hey i almost forgot. see the little spark plug in the first pic?

it was wedged in behind the old wire wheel. i wonder how long the old guy looked for it  when it got pulled from his hands before he said "piss on it" and went to town for a new one!

I've got a couple stashed under the bench. I don't have a good system to mount them other than the old board clamped to the table. I keep thinking I need to figure something out to simplify that, just haven't got to it yet. I'll have to dig them out for some pics.

Use  a receiver mount. Mount the female part of the receiver under the edge of the bench and the male part that slides in to the underside of the board the grinder is mounted to. Then you will have a secure mount where you can use then stow the grinder if that is what you need.

Looks like you might be needing a new stone soon.

I've needed a new one for a while, but the local hardware store doesn't have them.
I use the wire wheel most anyways since I've got files and and angle grinder, so I'm not going to hurry to get one.

It's a classic rebuild TM -- you did a stellar job on that old girl.

BTW -- do you still have all those data sheets you developed about the various models? If so, would you consider reposting them please -- if you still have them that is.

Thanks in advance -

Thank you GF.

If I recall, you did a tread way back when that got me thinking I needed to replace my sorry excuse for a grinder - 'Little Red'.

The rest is history - I have 1/4-HP to 1-HP and all the in-between flavors. Some waiting their turn on the restore bench, others like the 3/4-HP that lend a hand in restoring the rest of the family.

That's my home made stand, a 1/4" steel plate welded to galvinized drain pipe and stuck into a bucket of cement.  :D

I have two -- a 1/3 HP model that I refurbished and turned into a grinder/belt sander combination ....

...and a newer version 1/2HP that I refurbished and turned into nice standard drill bit grinder

Here's an example of Craftsman's most popular (judging from the number on CL) Block grinder - a round top 1/3-HP.

This guy was adopted by a nice, rich couple from eBay.  ;)

This is the model I use except it is a 1/2hp with 7" wheels, I love mine. I have a newer lower HP block grinder but it is not my favorite, the round top is.

Thank you GF. I'm glad I re-read the posts, I missed the 'data sheet' part.

Is this the one you are asking about? It's not complete, but it does have some info that may be interesting or even useful to other Block heads.  ;D

BTW - I haven't figured out how to 'embed' the pictures in the text. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I haven't figured that out either. I usually host on Flickr and Photobucket and that allows me to embed the links in the text, but otherwise I don't have a clue -- sorry TM

Thanks. After the PB debacle, I'll never give them my business again. Something about .... second time, shame on me.

For now, I'll just post them like this.

Here's a nice 1/2-HP round top for $50, just listed. Oh, it's not mine.

Darn nice grinders, guys.

I need to get me a block grinder. That's one of two of the last tools I need.

Same model as mine except I did not get the quench tray with mine, about the same price as I paid too. Don't come up around here often, but when they do they are often missing pieces and parts, and half the time more than $50.
