Monty python and the holy screwdriver set
« on: March 07, 2024, 11:46:26 PM »
I believe my quest is over, I've determined the perfect screwdriver set doesn't actually exist.
Every set I've tried will have some handle sizes that I simply don't like or just find wrong for the particular screwdriver size.

Perhaps the 1/4" -5/16" are just right but the #2 is too small, maybe they're even too big or I can't even get certain drivers in a set.
The Stanley 100 plus set probably came the closest, but there's also no such thing as a perfect handle that's ideal for every grip / technique.

anyways these 9 drivers currently comprise my ideal general purpose screwdriver set.

Some Williams,  some Tekton, Stanley 100 plus, and that awesome old Wood handle PROTO.

Always lookin' to learn

That PROTO 5/16 with striking cap could probably do, but I've got a full set of WILDE handle pry bars.

You are missing the point. Even when guys have one, or even two sets of prybars, in the heat of battle with something mechanical almost every guy will grab a least favored screwdriver and wail the crap out of it instead of taking the time to go retrieve the prybar that is actually the right tool for the job they are doing! No, I can't explain that logic, or lack of logic!  :33:

And that's why I have the pry bars hanging on the side of my cart, the temptation to abuse a flat blade driver is too great so I keep the pry bars handy so I don't have to.

The Bertha bar of my ratchets is an old 3/4" drive torque wrench I hauled out of a scrap yard. Roughly 40" long I have never had that fail to remove even the most stubborn nuts and bolts.  However, you need just short of a football field to get it into action! :))

Craftsman made a big flathead driver, probably 18 in long 1/2 in flat blade. I bet I wore out 3-4 of them. I doubt I ever used one to actually turn a screw but I used it for just about everything else. I dont think I ever bent one. Usually the handles fell apart.

I really liked those Williams hard handles. They made a long cabinet driver that was great for working in electrical cabinets. I could get a lot more torques on the squarish handles over the round handles of the craftys or the stanleys

I'm more of a hammer guy... Anything with in reach gets used as a hammer. I usually end up breaking tips on my smaller "prybars" :))

Here is my example of a slotted pry bar that identifies as a screwdriver. If I remember correctly I found it on a roadside while changing a tire.

So does that " pry bar " go with your other pry bars or with your screwdrivers?
I could use a screwdriver as a pry bar, but if I was using it as a pry bar I'd want to keep it with the other pry bars because that's where I reach when I want to pry on something.

I don't ever recall using a SO screwdriver to pry on anything more demanding than a can of paint. Generally if I use a screwdriver to pry it is a turd I don't care about.
