Tube/Rod/Wire Straightners
« on: October 09, 2018, 01:38:36 PM »
This is one use for junk drawer bearings and a chunk of scrap. The bearings don't need to match, but that requires a little more math. They only take a few minutes to make up and are handy occasionally. Space the bearings half their diameter plus half the tube diameter minus a few thousandths from the centerline. The goal is to make the tube snake a tiny bit(.005-.010") through the bearings. A few passes back and forth will take anything but the nastiest kink out. The commercial ones are adjustable on the amount of "snake", but I don't think they are $100 better than my quick and dirty ones.

Nice Greyson. How much time have I wasted trying to straighten copper tubing, too much.

That is a great idea.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

I should combine sizes so two sizes share the center three bearings, but I have just whipped these up as they were needed. I'd have though something would be commercially available for cheap, but I haven't seen anything.

I think you could make it adjustable by using slots instead of holes to secure the bearings. Wouldn't that work?

Maybe. It take quite a bit of snort to use on seamless hydraulic tubing, and I think the screws might slip. I think you'd need pressure screws at 90 deg to the action to hold things in place. I have no complaints with the operation of them as is.

That is pretty darn slick.  I have never worked with tubing so I don't really know how much of a pain it must be
