I got this USA made Craftsman No. 51871 5 1/2" W x 7" opening swivel base bench vise today at a garage sale. There was a lot of crappy tools there and I spotted this under a work bench. The woman there said her husband left to get lunch , but she would take $ 20.00 for it. Well you know I just couldn't leave it there. I wonder who made this for Craftsman.

Some more pics.

That looks like a good vise and for $20 can't beat it.

Looks good for $20 to me.
I don't have time to go or much of anywhere to go to find decent tools, but I definitely need to get a better vise.
I'm still using a not so great 70's import ( as I reluctantly learned on the old GG ) from my mom's grandfather, it works but it's definitely not great and now has a crack in it.
I believe I have stopped the crack with a hole but I know I just need to replace it when I can, but i don't want a modern import that's for sure.

I bet it is a Wilton

Is the hole in the jaws supposed to be there?

Yes. I've seen this hole in other Craftsman vise jaws from this era.

Yes, that is for holding round stock and very handy if you've ever fought a piece of round in the flat jaws.
