Did some drywall work today....OMG..the joint compound choices!!

Its been probably 8 years since I put away the drywall tools on the inside of the house project. I found the joint compound bucket (mostly dried up when I opened it), and my tools, and of course the 1/2 used bag of wall texture for mixing and putting in the texture gun.

While trying to mix up a quick batch of mud using the wall texture material, I thought I would go to the USG site to see if there was anything off limits for using wall texture for joint compound. Boy was blinded by all the joint compound choices!

I guess gone are the days of just one choice.

There is still only one choice in my book, the quick set bag mix. All of the other stuff you get in a bucket likes to crack after a few years. Mostly because people buy the bucket and apply the mud and never add in any extra water, they never get the finish or strength they need when they apply it stiff as a board.

i feel the pain. i just finished a honey do project last week. 

what started as repairing a crack in a 100+ year old house  with mortar and lathe ended with   an ice cream bucket of broken mortar on the floor and a whole bunch of swearing. the mrs. tellin me maybe i needed to call a pro didn't help. 


in the end, it got fixed , repainted and my college student son switched his stuff in there. 

of course that left a semi open room to work on. fortunately no big issues in that one.
