What are these for

I bought these the other day for a buck and I have no idea what they are for. Hope someone else does

Not positive from the pics, but they look like piston ring pliers to install pistons in blocks. Specifically the kind that had the interchangeable compression bands to accommodate different diameter pistons. The bands hooked into the slots and you squeezed the pliers to compress the band (and the rings in the process) on the pistons.

the only hitch I think is these  the jaws open when squeezed

Quite right, but from the pic I thought they could be re-positioned to close as well -- kind of like the snap ring pliers. That said, if they only open, then that eliminates the ring band compression tool idea.

In my experience, you would squeeze the ring open with that tool to slide it on to the piston. Then let it close to release the ring.

I think it might be for making adjustments to cable ends with the lead balls or knots on their ends. Just a guess.
