1/2 hp block grinder at the pawnie
« on: November 17, 2020, 06:27:50 PM »
i picked up  this 1/2 hp bad boy yesterday for 30 bucks. plenty dirty but it is all there. shields, side covers, spark arresters and rests.

i think the first time the shields have been  off is today. as i suspected, original wheels.

Great price, and an excellent grinder. They truly don't make them like that anymore for the Harry home-owner market; which is a shame.

That is an excellent find and price as that is a much better condition than you usually find them. :great:

a hose down with glass cleaner, swapping the rests around the correct way and blowing  the crud out of the cracks with an air hose.

looks like a better investment now.

for some reason the decal is very faded. i was hoping cleaning the crud off would bring it out but no luck. the scuff on the shield is from rubbing on the wheel. :41:

i might snoop around the block grinder thread at the journal and see if i can find a repro from somebody but the paint while not perfect is probably to good to fool with.

Prolly stolen right off Grandpa`s bench.

a little story. i asked if i could plug it in. it was marked 50 but was stuck. hit the switch and it just hummed. i said what will you  take and he said 20 bucks. i knew the risk was worth it so walked out to get my cash. when i came back in it was humming quietly on the counter. someone had adjusted the spark shield against the wheel (not me). one of the guys at the counter had figured it out and loosened it up. the price went up 10 bucks in 2 minutes but it was still worth it.

he said a lady had brought it and some other power tools in and they  had just come out. i have no idea what else there was as everything else was junk.

Nice grab! The quench tray is commonly missing as well. Some have them build date ink stamped on the bottom plate.

I used to own a block with a very faded sticker, but it came from a shop with big windows, so it's probably UV degradation.

They did fade very quickly, and in many instances they completely delaminated when exposed to extreme temp differences in unheated/cooled shops. I have one with a very faded peeling sticker that had been sitting in a dirt floor shop for many decades.

Ten years back I saw one of these at an estate sale.  Typical  basement shop, narrow steep stairs, on the original painted stand.  I had just been introduced to  this variety of grinder,  this one was flawless, shields and all.  Didnt have an extra $20 on me, they were solid at $75.  Heck, not seen one since.

Great score!

"PM Torqueman -- he has all the decal files for the various models." - I do have a collection of jpeg files, you are welcome to.

However, member MattBlast on the other site, does a fantastic job. I've used several of his high resolution labels for my recent restores.

Here's a link to his thread "Vintage Grinder Sticker Reproduction". -->
