Never be without a 10mm socket again
« on: November 22, 2020, 07:21:57 PM »
I was looking for a subtle way to personalize my new leather jacket ( NOS made by TLW in 1990 ) and came up with this zipper pull.

Just a socket and a loop of paracord, in this case a lone Blackhawk 12mm I had laying around.

Of course you could just as easily use it as a keychain so it's on you no matter what time of year it is.

Oh I don't misplace my jackets, but I do have other jackets and might not he wearing this one when I need it.
One could buy a bunch of 10mm sockets and put one on every jacket if they wanted.

Is there a story behind the 30 year old NOS jacket?  Deadstock?

That socket might have been made in China or Taiwan, then "finished" in the USA.  Stanley got in trouble for that.  I've always wondered which sockets this applies to.

Illinois municipal state surplus, unissued with no patches...ect.

I got the socket at a place that had bins of random NOS American made sockets and a wrenches for a while.
Thorsen,  Easco,  Blackhawk, unbranded Stanley, Husky, master mechanic, and Cobalt.

Ha ha.  It doesn't surprise me at all that Illinois would spend taxpayer money on something that would sit on a shelf for 30 years.

The place I ordered it from had about every size available too, so it's not like it was just a matter of uncommon sizes being unneeded or anything.

Regardless of what led to it being put on the surplus market, I'm glad it did.
I was able to get a jacket for $250 that would have to cost at least $500 if manufactured new in the US today.
Hell the company who made it still offers a similar model , but all their jackets are now made in Pakistan and cost $150 more than I payed for this.

This jacket has a two way zipper, so I added an Easco 1/4 socket to the bottom zipper.

I have one, so I could.

You know what's crazy , just yesterday I saw an add on YouTube for a Chinese knockoff that was acting like it was some kind of new revolutionary thing.
After at least 20 years or so of the original not being that great you'd think they'd move on to ripping off something else, but I think the gator grip really was a million dollar idea.
The thought of 1 socket that can replace a whole set will always sell.

Good idea.

What is the jacket? I have been coveting a WWII style A-2 flight jacket for years.

The jacket is an unissued Illinois state police jacket, made in the USA by Taylor's leatherwear.
Mine is dated 1990 but I expect the dates of manufacture might vary.
If you're interested sportsmans guide still has them.
There was a police patch on each shoulder which got removed before being surplused, but it's not very noticeable.

If you look on EBAY I've seen many 30's+ leather jackets in varying conditions for prices as low as $30 so if you keep an eye out you can probably find a postwar civilian A2 from a Sears or JC Penny's
house brand like Hercules or Sportclad  in your size in good condition for a very reasonable price.

For a brand new quality A2 you're talking $700+.
