Ammo sales up due to virus?
« on: March 06, 2020, 10:06:50 AM »
An online ammo retailer is reporting sales have surged in response to the Coronavirus. I take this report with a grain of salt. Could the surge have anything to do with the Democrat primaries or other factors? Or maybe the ammo seller is trying to boost sales numbers with this report by making it look like there could be a shortage of ammo?

Yup -- saw the price of a case of 22LR (5000 rounds) jump from an average of $130 at the start of last year, to $155 last summer -- now the average is around $170. There are cheaper on-line sellers, but they will usually gouge on shipping to make up the difference on discount pricing.

I see it as a barometer for not only Corona, but the state of politics in general. If the President wins in 2020, then the prices will drop back down to 2016-17  levels. If not, then there will be run on ammo that we haven't seen since Pres. Obama was elected in 2008.

Another case of fudd's and keyboard cowboys ruining it for everybody. I would like to know what these people are doing with all of this ammo they are hording up. Do they expect to be some sort of mad max ammo salesman after the corona virus has killed 2% of the world population?  :34:

On this same subject, did anybody see the guy on channel 3 asking what tools he would need in post apocalyptic life?

 :stupid:

Wanna see what hysteria looks like -- just spend a few minutes wandering around COSTCO. I made the mistake of going there on Monday -- pandemonium!!!!

As an aside, I told my wife that if this hysteria keeps going for another two weeks, we're going to book a 10 day cruise. The bottom has dropped out of that industry and you can now get 40-50% discounts on cruise packages. If all stays the same, then in another two weeks to a month, you'll get the cruise for 60% off (or more), plus I can get upgraded to a full suite for the price of a regular outside cabin that was posted just last December.

Take advantage of the panic -- buy stocks, and lock in vacation and air packages.

As a bonus on the cruise you may get an extended cruise because a fellow passenger has the sniffles and they won't let the ship dock anywhere. ;)

Never found out why the dooms day guy was having an auction last Saturday, but it included nearly 50,000 rounds of ammo, 25 guns of various types and a lot of dried food.  I finally gave up and left as the guns were going at about 25% over list and the ammo about 10%.  Most of the stuff was less than five years old.  The reason for the guns going high is that there is no record of the sales. :a102:

Somebody told me way back that one should get an "odd" caliber gun so if there's a run on ammo, not a whole lot of people will be going after what you need. Seemed like pretty good advice.

I went on one cruise out of New Orleans. I dont think I would do that again, to many people, to much food, drinks to expensive, and the wife was sea sick most of the time. And as granddad always said, "Thats a long ass swim back home."

Just checked ammoseek.com on .223 Rem. pricing. It's amazing! In just three days a case (1000 rounds) of cheap steel cased 55gr. FMJ Tulammo has gone from $169.00 to ~$200.00, -- if it is in stock. Bulk 22LR has gone from 2.6 cents/round to 3+ cents/round.

Ammo buying/hoarding is just as prevalent now as is the panic buying of TP and hand sanitizer.

The big sporting goods chains are being inundated with requests for ammunition right now. Parking lots are full, and people are buying.

Loved this pic when I saw it on a forum. Pretty much depicts the mood of the country right now -- especially in the South.

I grab ammo cans whenever I find them. Store tools, hardware, and parts - their rubber seals are great for keeping out unwanted moisture. But now I'm thinking people might see the green cans and think they're ammo and swipe them. Perhaps I should paint 'em pink?  :017:

I have a pretty good stock of steel case commie made .223, I should sell it and double my $$.

I went through Rural King Saturday morning, .223 was gone, bulk .22 was stocked, 5.56 was stocked (and pricey), 9mm cheep stuff was gone, and all buckshot was gone.

Pretty much the same around here -- only thing left are the hunting calibers (although 30-30 is also bare), and some odd handgun calibers

Been doing some surfing on ammo sites and the price (if you can find it) of steel cased 55gr. FMJ .223 Rem. is now totally in LaLa-Land. Sites are asking between $300.00 and $600.00 for a bulk case of 1000rds. --- summer of 2018 I was buying it at $129-$139 regularly without coupons or discounts.

....AND as expected, the biggest gouger of all is the Cheaper Than Dirt company; which is now selling a pack of 20 TulAmmo 55gr FMJ .223 Rem. cartridges for $19.89. -- that's $994.50 for 1000rds. Gouging at its finest.

The local big box sport store was running low yesterday. They did have some Federal 5.56 $65 for 200. Not too bad. They have a three box limit. I picked up a box of 243 also. My shooting bud has a reload setup for 556 and he’s running about 200 a day. Enough to keep us shooting regular anyway.

My LGS has a good inventory of hunting calibers -- 243 seems to be the most plentiful, with 25-06, 22-250 and 257 Roberts also in great shape. 30-06 is almost gone. Probably because it's one of the most popular hunting rounds, but also because a lot of older military rifles were chambered for it. Reloading supplies are non-existent.

Stopped by the local Academy sports store this afternoon and picked up a can of powder and a case of primers. I've got about 500 rounds of .38 that need loading. need to get some time in with my EDC. Freshen up some. :97:
