Model Train layout
« on: January 30, 2020, 09:00:55 PM »
Last weekend I built the table for my 3' x 6' N scale model Train layout I'm going to be putting together.

Made out of 2 x 4s it's a bit overkill, but that's how I build things lol

muddy,

You want, need models rolling stock, all well detailed, weathered, first class stuff. Selling off my layout

Here is a quick example of what is up for grabs.

No worry I can work with you, get you and your son started . What is the theme, freight, passenger, city, country side, industrial?

cheers,

Pep

My plan is a freight (mostly lumber, coal, grain, livestock, etc) small town. So mostly cattle cars hopper bottoms flat beds etc.

I'm including a grist mill, a farm house,  hardware store and a "main street" with several businesses.

What scale is your layout looks more like HO?

How about this 35$ + shipping everything seen, does not come with the ground cover LOL

If you like email:

Layed the plywood and foam base. 3/8" plywood with 2" foam glued on top. 2" will give me good depth for some streams and valleys. (The stuff on top was to help the glue set....and it was an empty flat surface lol)

Going to mock up some track this weekend.

Mocked up track tonight. May have to rethink my layout as it's a bit tighter then was initially thinking. Right now it's the basic n-6 from the Atlas plan book.

Need to pick up a few more switches to fill in the inside and add a few custom lines yet.

Good choice that is the same track plan I used for a layout. 2 track main line is perfect, it also started on a 4 x 8. After some fun, opened one end of the loop. Added another sheet, became and L, some curves doubled the main line. That is going to be fun, you will be very glad having 2 main lines.

I was never a wood worker, nor do i have any skills in that craft, but one of my lifelong dreams was to make an N scale coffee table layout with a glass top and two line operation. I saw such a layout at a train show in Germany once and fell in love with the idea. When we get resettled into a new home i will try my hand at it. I already have two N scale train packs in storage. I bought two complete KATO trains sets many years ago for for $10ea when KB Toys went out of business.

So the dream of that coffee table has been a long time coming. The train sets are in their original shrink wrapped packages, but are decades old.

That was quite a score on the Kato sets as those aren't cheap. I had a 4x8' layout in N scale and used HO under the Christmas tree but no layout now. Still have all the train stuff packed in boxes.

Kato was like the early Bachmen, but as of 15 years ago the did come of age. And now the with the DCC control. Track voltage is a constant 12vdc, no need for block isolation. Each engine has its own throttle module.

It makes running 2 locomotives in tandem extremely easy. They have ip addresses as access, sync the speeds.

Down side of a coffee table layouts, if like me the shin or toe finds the leg or table edge........ derailments are common ,  :c002: kind of like that jeep thing...

My oldest daughter recently moved out of the basement. Once we get the mess down there cleaned up I have hopes of setting up a fairly large Lionel O gauge and American Flyer S gauge layouts. I have been laying back a bunch of Lionel, Marx, Plastiville, and American Flyer accessories. Of course, many of those accessories are not to scale, nor as lifelike as what real good modelers would use, plus the three rail issue of O gauge,  but they will please me just fine. I have no illusions of trying to make a layout as cool as real dedicated model railroaders like pep would do.

I just like the old Lionel, Marx and American Flyer stuff that I had as a kid and want to put something fun together I can leave on a dedicated layout.

I decided I'm going to go with DCC instead DC. The big difference between the two is how the power gets to the track/locomotive.

With DC your transformer controls the power going to the track and adjusts it via a variable switch you control witch the motor inside the loco responds to according speeding up or slowing down.

DCC is a little more complicated. With a DCC system. The track stays at one voltage and the loco is controlled by a "throttle" and adjusts the voltage going to the loco with onboard computer chips.

DCC also allows your loco to have sounds! Gotta have the bell and whistle or horn right?!

There's also more to it, and it can get confusing. I'm not sure I really understand it yet. But here is a helpful article if your interested...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/modelrailwayengineer.com/model-railway-analog-or-digital-dc-or-dcc/amp/

Anyway I bought a starter set by one of the biggest names in DCC and this set has tons of positive reviews and super easy to wire up so it should be good for a beginner like me.

However I think I'm going to have to go to the store and get the real brown that i want as this is more olive drab :))

Smart move, Tim

Money well spent, no need for block control, also can adjust or sync the speed of locos, to run double headers.

Since the Rona virus has my hobby shop closed, got to wait for roadbed and glue.

I'll work on some buildings while I wait.

That will work well, and it's fairly cheap these days. That said, back in the day my dad used to use dry colored chalk dust on a brush to weather cars and buildings, and then "fix" the dust with flat clear paint. He did some amazing work with that method.

He made the chalk dust by rubbing chalk over 220 grit sandpaper --

Well looking at this thread it's been about 2 years since I touched the lay out. It's just been setting being used as a flat surface for junk and dust.

But I moved it back over to the "work" area of the basement.

Last night I pinned the track in place. The double loop is the mainstay of the layout. The inner and outer spurs and turnouts are still up for debate in my head.

Tonight I traced the track for prep in laying road bed. I found this sharpie works well for tracing the track. Place the end of the gray part on the rail and follow around and it's the perfect distance for the road bed I'm using.

Some progress this weekend. Got the foam road bed laid. I went with foam for noise reduction and the fact its pretty much good for life. I used liquid nails projects for the adhesive.

Cork bed has been used for years and is still used and a viable option. However its a bit more work to lay and over time will dry up and get hard and deteriorate. It is also known to transfer noise into to the layout. However with a foam sub road bed that probably wouldn't have been a problem for me.

The "mainline" or loops got glued in place tonight.

I didn't glue the switches(turnouts) as after playing with a few of them, I found some of them need replacing. They were a lot I had gotten off eBay when I first started this project. So who knows how old they are. Some of them are metal housing and made in Austria.

I learned a trick to cut a few ties back at the jointers. This way I can slide the jointers back and take the switches out for replacement.

Went to a local meet yesterday. Not much for N scale. If you needed Lionel or HO scale you would be set.

Anyway I found this locomotive for $5. A Life Like  The chassis is a bit bowed which is why it was so cheap. However when I got it home it runs good on the track I made for the kids. So I don't think I'm going to worry about it much. Not sure if I'm going to convert this to DCC or not. Might just leave it for the kids circle track and it's a lower grade locomotive. Overall I think it's definitely worth $5!

Also found two switches for $5 each.

Got the yard track,  and track to engine house laid. Also installed the ground throws style switch controls. Some of the older switches have a different style throw bar that didn't place nicely with the ground throws.  So they may need to be replaced over time we shall see

Well track is pretty much all laid. Had a change of plans. Instead of and engine house, I'm going to have a coal dealer on the siding. So I dug a pit for the coal elevator.

These tracks could also be tied into an expansion one day (Woah Tim slow down let's keep working on this one! :)) )

This is going to be more of a "switching" layout. Definitely freelance.

Next project will be wiring.

Practiced air brushing on a funnel with some primer and colors. The green didn't dry as fast as evident by the finger prints and paint on my finger :)). Went ahead and primered one of the out l buildings. Gotta figure out a way to rig up some lights for this paint booth....

RR, Coming along nicely.......  V..... lol that is exactly what happens.

You're going to love what can be done with the air brush. Great for high lighting, making stuff stand out. Just dusting the models will bring out the edges. You will see what I mean the first time you try it.

Forget the chalks for weathering, 2 reason it needs to be sealed (cleared) or it wipes off. And that mutes the effect, and then it's lost.

Single action air brush is the ticket,  BTW

Nice loading dock....

Enjoy

Stick with incandescent lighting for the booth, more natural.

I'm having fun with the air brushing so far. Bit of a learning curve but getting the hang of it.

The kit came with a dual action. Just a simple knock off. I found a Paasche model H on ebay that I'm going try out. That's an almost 50 yr old single action. But everyone says they are just good solid workhorses. Still made to this day even.

Started spraying some color tonight. It wasn't spraying quite right. It was pushing paint through before the needle was even open. Also it was really spitting and splotchy.

Turns out when I cleaned it last and reassembled I was a bit too rough with the needle. Bent the tip just enough to booger it.

Got a new one coming. Oh well live and learn, I've never been the most delicate person.

I was doing the same tear down to clean, later I learned to just load some thinner. Pointing at a paper towel, cycle the spray pattern full open to close.

Until the thinner sprays clean, using an acid brush (silver handle, stiff black bristle) clean the inside of the nozzle.

Makes life so easy, some get a little crazy with the air brush. One more stick with the single action, it will serve you well.

Thanks for the tip! I ordered an adapter for my single action Paasche model H once it comes I'll have to give it a go.

Pretty cool work Tim. You have an artistic side --
I always enjoyed weathering model trains and rolling stock by dry-brushing with colored chalk dust and then fixing it with flat clear enamel. Your air brush is a much better process though.

Thanks Ray the artistic side is there, however skill isn't always the best, but is improving.

With N scale in not sure the air brush will go fine enough for done detail work so that will still be done by hand

Laser cut wood. A little bit to the imagination but it'll be dumped into a pit and the elevatored up and out.

Good one looks used already, todays wood laser cut kits are the BOMB, worth every penny.

The drive in model sent, will be a real cool addition, especially with the sign, I think those LEDs are chase lighting.

If you have not thought of it, yet, you can air brush the tracks, to weather.  Shoot & wipe the top of the rails with lacquer thinner, right after it is spraided.

When paint has dried, take a track cleaner eraser, clean the residue off the rail tops.

Heck the kids can spray the rail to make them look weathered, great training, cause its freelance.

You have made the right choice sticking with the atlas track, first layout I built ran way better with that track. ..... the best.

If Atlas makes live frog turn outs, recommend spending the extra for them. Especially for the yards or any areas that rolling stock will be shuffled around. Engines can creep without stalling on the insulated frogs.

OK enough  babbling for now

Rock on

Yep that's how I plan to weather the track. I don't believe Atlas makes electro frog. Peco seems to be the go to for that. They are a bit different sized so it would take a bit of work to fit them in.

Picked up these magazines for $5 all issues from 1984 and 1988.

Granted the technology is a bit outdated. But a lot of the basic concepts can be used.

Been working on the coal elevator this week. This laser cut kit is nicely made and easy to put together all though the coal chutes are a patience testers.
