Helped my son change the clutch in his Subaru
« on: March 21, 2021, 11:14:06 PM »
Halepd my son change the clutch in a '96 Legacy, 2.2L engine.  Had to pull the engine.  Found that the friction disk had broken, never saw that one before!  That explained why it suddenly stopped engaging.  Put it all back together, and it wouldn't turn over - the starter crapped out.  Put in a starter from a parts rig and we're back in business.

I grew up with a fleet of mid 80s subaru GL's. I though it was SOP to pull an engine to do a clutch until later in life after being around them. The Japs had things pretty well figured out on those. Easy to work on with only a few common issues. I remember we'd run them until the timing belt snapped because they weren't zero clearance engines. I hate that when you put something back together and it won't go. Luckily it was a simple fix. I've put a couple torque converters in wrong, and had to go back in deep to get things to roll.
