Old time window putty: calcium carbonate (powdered chalk) and linseed oil. Non-hardening and non-toxic.  :great:

Correction: It does "harden" but not completely like spackle. It stays semi-soft to allow for thermal expansion and contraction without cracking. And it be cheap!
