Wire strippers recommendations.
« on: April 25, 2022, 02:51:02 PM »
Is there a pair of automatic wire strippers out there that is just hand over fist better than all others? I’m really tired of trying to use a pair of dykes to strip wires. I want to be sure I’m getting the best time for my money.

Lots of choices out there, and prices range fairly wide as well. Are you mostly looking to strip solid or stranded core wire? Some strippers excel at one or the other. Either way, in doing your research I’d include a look at the offerings of Klein Tools. They have a wide range of options, for both stranded and solid core wires. Prices are reasonable as well.
Good luck in your search.

Im not a huge fan of the automatic strippers. I always find myself having to grab a pair of cutters at the same time. I have a pair of Kleins and a pair of Ideal strippers/crimpers/cutters and both are great tools. Made in the US to boot.

I am by no means a wiring expert.  That said, couple styles may be in order. I have some stripper/crimper tools with the stripper in front of the pivot and crimper behind.  I have some with the crimper in front and stripper behind.

You will thank me if you ever need to strip a couple wireds down in a confined space and the stripper is behind the jaws. Same goes for the crimper.

These are the shizzle for me.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

I don’t mind buying two strippers. Stranded wire for automotive work and solid for household.

I will eventually get one like this. No one stripper works best in all situations. Eventually, i will need one I don’t have. I can fix that. The big question is which brand/model is the best of each style?

I have several pair.

Although I more prefer solder these stripper/crimpers come in handy in tight spaces. Though like SK said the stripper being on the back side of the joint can be a problem.

Sometimes the jaws/ leverage isn't enough for the bigger wire so I have a regular crimper like this.

Also use a set like this for hard to reach spots.

If I'm doing alot of wiring I use these

Like you have heard from others there is not a single one or type that will work well in all situations.

My experience with electrical tools is that you can't go wrong with Klein.

I have also found that have a true crimper for use on those type of connectors is much better than those in the strippers.

Some options at HF. I picked up the pistol grip style for home use on Friday.

The blue Kliens in Stokesters post are the only auto strippers I use.

A lot of our switch gear at work is 50+ years old. We're often rehabbing a whole panel just because a simple starter went out and a replacement wont fit in the allotted space.  :banghead:  Way easier to just start over.
