Picking a video camera and video editor
« on: February 10, 2019, 08:21:54 AM »
I’m about to embark on a car build and I want to video the whole thing. Any recommendation on a camera and a video editor? The objective is to show each stage of the project and post them to my YouTube channel. Thanks for the help.

Most of the producers of YouTube video I watch are using DSLR cameras to record their video. Most dslrs, plus an external mic, produce good quality video. I edit with Windows Moviemaker. It (or the Apple equivalent) is OK for what you are trying to do. Just make sure you have good lighting and the mic close enough.

Will a GoPro do the job?

A GoPro will be fine. It just has a wider field of view. This might actually be better for stuff in the garage where you can't get the camera a decent distance from the work.

All the in-car footage on my Youtube channel is taken with a GoPro. https://www.youtube.com/user/Rural53NZ

Post up your findings as I'd be interested in starting to make some videos as well. Guess I need a computer too...

I need to find the first model GoPro that had wireless capability. I want to use my tablet as a view screen so I’ll know the camera is focused where it needs to be.

I will be sharing every little detail about that but I’ll give you the quick rundown now.

I like the Mazda BG platform. That was used for cars like the 90-94 Mazda 323 and Protege, 91-02 Ford Escort, 95-97 Kia Sepia, and 91-99 Mercury Tracer.

I have had a couple Mazda 323 and really like my 91 model. The 323’s were really basic cars. Mine has no AC and manual steering. Most didn’t even come with a left side mirror.

The Protege is mechanically the same car. Everything between the radiator to the steering wheel is exactly the same. But the Protege had an engine option that the 323 didn’t. While most 323’s had the 1.6L SOHC engine, the Protege had a 1.8L DOHC. It will bolt right in to the 323. The stock Protege suspension is an upgrade to the 323 and will bolt right in. While the Protege had 4 wheel disk brakes on some models, it was only avail on the GTX and GTR versions of the 323 and those were only sold in Japan and Canada. They also had turbo. The only way to get a factory turbo engine for my car is to by a JDM engine and that’s not cheap.

While none of the Protege or Escort body parts will fit my 323, there were a few 323’s with all the bells and whistles so parts like power mirrors and rear wiper are available as salvage and through the dealer.

My plan is to get a 94 Protege LX and swap the entire suspension to my 323 as well as everything from the steering wheel to the radiatior. I will add the rear wiper if I can get the parts. That feature was far more common on the 323’s in Australia so I can get them. Oh, some cars in Australia had glass lenses in the headlight assemblies instead of plastic. This build will start with a COMPLETE tear down if my 323. When I’m done, I will have the best 323 that could have been built, short of having turbo, that could have been built using OEM parts. There’s also something called a VR4 brake upgrade. The rotors from the 94 Mitsubishi Galant are thicker than 323 rotors and are a direct fit. Calipers from the 1st get Miata are part of the upgrade and are a direct fit. I haven’t checked but I think they’re the same as the ones from the Protege with 14” wheels. I’ve also heard the 1st gen Miata had the same 1.8L engine as the Protege but with a better cam. I will be researching all that before I turn the first wrench.

The 323’s in Europe and Australia has different bumpers and a small spoiler at the top of the hatchback. I’ll get those if I can. Since these cars were very popular as rally cars, there was a lot of aftermarket support at the time. The 323 and Mazda 3 still have a large following. I will consider adding a turbo kit but I’m inclined to stick with all parts being OEM so we will see.

When I rebuild the 1.8L engine, I will use non-OEM parts if necessary. The GTX and GTR engines had stronger connecting rods and pistons. I’ve got all the specs on the gear boxes so I will be looking for the exact one I want. The Protege I HAD and was going to use as a donor would really scoot so I gotta find which gear ratios were in that gearbox.

I’d like to switch from automatic seatbelts but finding the right interior trim pieces might prove to be difficult. Some Canadian 323’s didn’t have them and finding the correct interior trim piece will be the deciding factor on that.

I was looking on Amazon and found a GoPro knockoff that’s inexpensive and has a ton of reviews with a high average rating. I think it’s worth trying out.
