Snap-On ACT 5600
« on: August 18, 2019, 01:17:03 PM »
Does this only work for specific types of Freon or will it work for the types that came after R-12? Is it as simple as turning on a cars AC system and run the tip along all the lines and to every connection?

Older freon testers are refrigerant specific.

I found one listed on EBay that said it was for halogen, R12, and R22 but that was the sellers description. I’d like to find documentation that verifies that.

Surely by now the heated diode is wore out and wont pick up a thing. Thats a nice conversation piece,  but you would have better luck with soapy water.

I didn’t really get it to use it although the seller said it still works. I though someone here might like to add it to their collection. If not, there were many other local people trying to buy it besides me. I can always get my money back by selling it to the next guy.

Try it out. Hydrocarbons should set them off. Like brake cleaner or something.

You have hydrocarbons. Gas, permanent marker,  wd40, sometimes even bleach will work to test

If gas will trip the sensor then I’d think it wouldn’t be much use detecting Freon. There are many reasons the detector could pick up gas vapors under the hood when you’re trying to find a Freon leak. As far as I can tell, it was for detecting R-12 and R-22. I’ll never have cause for that.

I’ve posted it for sale here. If no one speaks up in a week or so, I’ll sell it locally and get my money back.
