Has your craftsman vacuum cleaner got a screaming bearing
« on: November 29, 2022, 12:13:32 AM »

A feller on GJ responded to my query about fixing this problem.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

The manufacturer (Shop VAC) probably used the bushing in the consumer grade units, and the bearing in the more expensive commercial units. It's a great fix -- thanks for posting Jabber.

I guess that in a pinch if a bearing size wasn't available, you could also machine down a sintered oil impregnated bushing to fit a motor shaft.

Thanks for the tip. I have a very old CM shop vac that just screams. I'll see if this will work on it.

Thanks for posting Jabber.

I've got a larger CMan shop vac with more than a few years on it so I may need one in the future.

So as you can see the bearing is not a snug fit . The outer race is a bit sloppy when you drop it in the bearing bracket so there's a possibility that the whole bearing will spin.
There's too much gap for a thin glue like loctite i was thinking jb weld but that would be a bitch to replace in the future if necessary.
Constriction Sicka adhesive maybee? at least you could cut it out as it`s doesn't set up hard , but would it grip the metal surface of the bearing?
Maybe give the bearing surface some tooth before applying?

Perhaps shim stock and/or one of these Loctite compounds for bearing retention.

I second torqueman2002 on the shim stock. That or aluminum or copper tape.

And it so happens I have some Al and Cu tape if you need. The Cu is about 0.003 and the Al about 0.004.

Thanks JAFE!

I have some aluminum HVAC tape (not DUCT/DUCK tape). Not sure of the thickness, but I might give that a go, if I need to.  :great:

Oh boy, have I done it now? What if Ryan follows me here? Think I'll get banned too?

Who is this Ryan you speak of and why would he care what anyone over here thinks about anything.

As for securing the bearing I would drill and thread a hole into the side of the metal cradle the bearing sets in then use a pointed set screw to secure the bearing from spinning. If necessary to center the bearing in the cradle repeat and use 2-3 set screws and holes to ensure the bearing is centered in its housing.
You boys better hold on cause I'm gonna have to stand on it!

May be tricky as it`s a very thin pot metal piece.

I have to see if I can find a bearing locally.  Online purchase, the bearing is $2.16 and the postage is $10.35.  Stupid!

It seems to be a common size, even used in skateboards (but sold in packs of 8).

This is my Shop Vac, I also have an old Craftsman (I think) with the same issue.  It's a nice change to open something up and find what was shown on a youtube video!
