That street scene picture is an eye opener. There's no trash on the street, cars are neatly parked, and the people no matter their social standing, are neatly dressed. THAT is a civilized society --

Its too bad that most of our modern society has never experienced that. During the MAGA craze, one of my 20ish yr old employees asked me when was America great? He had a hard time understanding that at one time a single income household could raise a family and buy a house. Like that photo, those days are long gone.

The office where I work has historical images from the local area as murals on the wall.  When they put them up a lot of people commented on the amount of trash visible in the photos.  I suspect it's more the case that the local businesses helped keep their area clean as it was good for business.     ;)

With our getting political America has always been great, if you were to pinpoint an era, post war 40s-50s we were the diamond amoung the rough.

Perfect? Absolutely not.

I believe it is the land of the most freedom and opportunity and that's what makes it great.

The Russian, and later Soviet, icebreaker Yermak was the first polar icebreaker in the world, having a strengthened hull shaped to ride over and crush pack ice up to 2 m thick. She was built in Newcastle upon Tyne by the British company Armstrong Whitworth at its Low Walker yard and launched in 1898. She served in the Baltic during both World Wars. In 1949 on the day of her 50th anniversary Yermak was awarded the Order of Lenin. After that she served another 15 years and in 1964 was decommissioned and dismantled in Murmansk.
