WHO MADE THIS VISE ??
« on: December 21, 2018, 10:29:13 PM »
I picked up this vise a couple of weeks ago. There is no name on it. Just 3-1 on the right side of the rear section and 3-3 on the left side on the front section. It measures : 4 1/4" wide jaws x 7" opening. It turns super smooth and the jaws line up perfect. Notice the swivel base. It turns super smooth. The jaws are still sharp. This is a really well made vise and it's really heavy.  That's why it was in the car for two weeks.   Any idea who made this vise ??

Prentiss. No doubt. The split base ring was their thing. The numbering on dynamic jaw matches the style of my Bulldog 5"

Was there any reason they didn't put their name on it ?

My guess would be contract built, perhaps for .gov, but it is a guess

That is a good looking vise and with little wear.    Nice grab

I agree with you, but that setup for retaining the swivel base is different on my 6" Prentiss than shown. The meatball looks too large. And the Prentiss wrench for locking swivel base looks different than shown. Also, what's up with the square nut behind main nut? Is that what happens when you drop the pin into Narnia behind your workbench?

I agree it's different as well. I think it's an older pattern. I have seen a few with the lightbulb shaped screw end. Prentiss made a bunch of changed over the years. For example, my 525 shown is the only one with a brass "BULLDOG' tag I've ever seen. With the sugestion of gov't spec, I think they could have modified some features for that run, like the swivel lock handle.

I believe I read somewhere about the brass tag vises. I'm wanting to say it was for a certain anniversary of Prentiss. Don't hold me to that, though.

Here is the bottom of mine, 2 bolts with washers. And then on a dolly. Currently apart, trying to get the f#+@!% swivel pin out. Hey, they match!  :D
