MACHINE SHOP / Another tool brand gone the way of the dodo!
« Last post by Uncle Buck on Today at 09:20:57 PM »
I was on HJ Epsteins site the other day and learned a few things I didn't know about grooved rules (the kind used by both machinists, and woodworkers with tri square heads. According to the guys a HJE, for a number of years the only companies producing grooved rules were Starrett and PEC. So for decades HJE has sold PEC factory seconds of PEC grooved rules that had the brand ground off of them.

So, the big news is that PEC was bought out by another company and will discontinue selling factory seconds grooved rules. Upon learning that news HJE found and bought thousands of grooved rules since they will not have an ongoing supplier in the near future.  They said they will have 17 various types of grooved rules available online  within the next few weeks. Of course the resource I spoke of in my thread about purchasing several seconds grooved rules from the yardstore will likely run out of their inventory fairly quickly too since they are selling PEC seconds too.

The big news to me was that PEC used to produce their grooved rules for many other brands except for Starrett. So, with Starrett absorbed by another company, and now the same thing happening only a couple of months later, it is feasible that the availability of either of these brands as USA made might be in question.

Looks like one of those tools that you don't use often, but are indispensable when you need it.

Another thing to consider is that the MSM is controlled by a small group of people who have an agenda to push. We're only getting the information that they want us to see.

Well it's coming apart OK. My local teenage helper holds interest and is gaining some good experience.

Probably no one there to monitor the site on a regular basis.

That's what I thought.  I wonder if something happened to Frank?

GENERAL DISCUSSION TO INCLUDE OFF TOPIC / Re: what did you do today?

My brother came by and has been recoating my roof with the cool coat. Since I'm not steady on a ladder anymore I helped him out by doing all the ground work. Moving vehicles, covering the A/C, lugging the garden hoses around, providing the TSP for cleaning, and checking on him regularly since it gets hot up there. Took time out to service/repair a pair of pump sprayers, got his wife's bicycle shifting properly, and doing some needed yard work such as weed wacking and trimming overgrowth around the tree trunks. The old muscles are protesting but overall got alot of chores done and I feel good overall. Chock it all up to spring maintenance!

Just for fun, here's a picture of the monster. Fortunately it does have cab doors to slam a hand in.

GENERAL TOOL AND MACHINE DISCUSSION / Re: Vise Stand - Options??
« Last post by nelstomlinson on Today at 10:12:19 AM »
I welded a chunk of heavy wall 4x4 tubing onto a heavy truck brake drum, welded a chunk of plate on top of that, and bolted on a $5 Chinesium vise. There's a steel tab welded on near the bottom of the tubing for my ground clamp.

It's mighty stable, but of course I can't wrench on it, since it'll spin. It lives outside the shop, and I mostly use it for holding materials while I cut or weld them.

The vise is another story. Years ago I took a pickup load of steel scrap to the recyclers. They were going to give me $5 for it, but there was a big Chinesium vise sitting on the ground nearby. I offered to take the vise instead of the cash, and they jumped at the deal.
