Title: check in friends.
Post by: skfarmer on March 21, 2020, 05:37:51 PM
no matter who you are, where you live and what you do. these are trying times. it seems really quiet and you may not think you have anything to offer but let's keep in touch. by the nature of this board we practice "social distancing".

you may not feel like talking or have anything to post but just let people know you are ok. post a gif, a smiley, a picture,  say hi, anything. just let us know you are still out there whether it is every day, once a week or once a month. just let everybody know you are ok.

here goes............

Great idea.

Not only check in here but check on friends around you.

The old folks don't need to be completely isolated in this time. we want to protect them by distancing but that can lead to isolation. give them a call just to say hey maybe a bit more frequent.

absolutely. if your phone works, call someone. a parent, a child, grandparents, friends, coworkers, anyone who may be missing or needing contact.

if you have to text, sure but real conversation can't be beat and may make the difference in someones day.

Great idea! Me and mine are good. The wife is done with work until next school year, the kids are done with school. Sadly it was my boys' senior year so he will miss out on a lot of very important stuff, but it cannot be helped.

My work told me to work from home beginning next week for which I am very thankful. Stay home with your families and take few risks.

A neighbor was doing an evap cooler restore and so I found myself on a roof actually doing some work! (It had been unused for probably 8-10 years when the previous owner switched over to A/C). Nice to actually get out and be productive.

Mrs work is considering a shutdown and have everyone work from home but it isn't really feasible. Our anniversary is next week but no restaurants and no movie theaters so probably be take-out and movie rental (if they're even open).

For the last week the country has closed the door to everyone except returning citizens/residents, who have to go into 14 day self isolation. On Saturday the response was increased to a Level 2 -Reduce This places further restrictions on mass gatherings (100 indoors, 500 outdoors), non-essential internal travel, physical distancing in public and high risk people advised to stay home (over 70 and those with other existing medical conditions). As I fall into the latter category I'm now working from home for the foreseeable future. My work has also reduced the number of staff in the office to less than 50%, with the rest working from home, to allow for physical distancing in the office.

Funny though, the time between clean and occupied with projects is very short.

Woke up to these peaceful scenes out the back deck.

Doing alright in South Dakota.  Where my wife and I work is considered an essential defense industry and will not be shut down due to current events. Wife is exercising her option to work from home.  My position as a tech mandates that I am on-site everyday.  Essentials can be sparse at times in local stores, but we are pretty well set at home. We live over half a mile from anyone, so we feel fortunate.

Nope, but a friend in the West Branch area up north works for the post office.  But he hasn't done a route in awhile.

It's amazing how easy it is to deal with cold AF temperatures when you're young, but you lose that ability as you get older.  At least I have.   :93:

I agree!

I was raised in western and central NY state; Buffalo and Syracuse. Lots of snow and temps below 0F were not uncommon. In fact, I would gleefully watch for it to dip below 0F through the heavily frosted storm windows.

I loved to down hill ski, and liked the challenge of forging out through the snow covered roads.

Yesterday, I found my thoughts wandering to me in a hammock somewhere in the sun in the Florida panhandle, being served a Gin and Tonic by a beautifuly tanned young lady with almost no .... then I woke up!  :015: :(

work has been deemed essential so for now the pay check will come in, until they need to reduce staff if this continues for much longer.

We are doing fine, and for once am glad we had a wake-up call about a year ago. Some of you may remember this thread....

http://garagegazette.com/index.php?topic=1711.0

That COSTCO incident and the various responses in that thread caused the Mrs. and I to load up our basement with some basic necessities to survive for at least a month. Little did we know that we would need some of that stash within just a few months. While we don't consider ourselves preppers in the same sense that those fundamentalist COSTCO shoppers were, it started a much needed conversation between the wife and I. Glad we followed through, and this will be part of our lifestyle from now on.

Thanks for the link GF as we had the important conversation last year and little did we know it would be very relevant now.
Fortunately the wife and I got our prescriptions filled just a couple weeks ago with a 90 day supply. I also refill as soon as insurance will allow and build up a few days extra reserve every time.

Yup, our grandparents who went through the depression considered emergency stocks as a normal occurrence. As in many things these days, we can learn a lot from their practices and experience.

My grandma canned veggies and made jams/jellies even in her late 80s. Didn’t have to, but it was part of her yearly routine.

Wife and myself went to closest town today, 13 miles, 250 people, grocery store, bank, dollar general, hardware store, couple of gas stations, and met one other truck on the way.  Very few people in town. Grocery had no paper products, little bread (one per) rationed bleach (one per) but most other items needed to eat.  First trip out in 10 days.

Geez, made a store run - what a pain! Not only are the stores running reduced hours (and every one different!), they're now only letting in a certain number of people at a time. So, you stand in line, waiting to get in - to even see if they have what you need!  :a102:
I prepared for 2-3 weeks some time ago, and am only going to the store to fill in holes in our stash as we make them. Not gonna wait in line like communist Russia waiting to see if they have bread today.  Pretty soon we need gov permission slips to even go out. :P

People don't even know how cook dried beans, there have been multiple articles about it lately. I rarely if ever use canned beans, they suck compared to soaking and cooking from dry.

I've been eating as much take out as I can while it lasts. Some of the little mom and pop cafes probably wont make it. I get 3 plates one for me one for the wife and one for lunch tomorrow. Total chaos at lunch trying to get thru these places when they aren't set up for take out.

Well that escalated quickly, about an hour after I wrote the above it was announced we were going to Level 3 and going to Level 4 - Eliminate within 48 hours. So as of midnight tonight people are instructed to stay at home, educational facilities closed, businesses closed except for essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics) and lifeline utilities and travel severely limited for at least four weeks.

Everyone in Ohio was instructed to shelter in place. Look at the road while driving many people are still out, I guess they are all essential like me  :D

The end is near though, the local gettin' place was out of stock when I went to buy some Busch Light  :91:

A couple of things I've noticed in the past few years are that more folks than you think have little to no food in their home. The only freezer is on top of the fridge and it has mostly freezy pops and ice cream bars. I'm stuck here at home for a few weeks or longer  and my goal is to empty out my freezer so I can start fresh this growing season and restock on some frozen veggies and maybe a deer or 1/4 beef.

Agreed! :great:

Figure I can save my canned stash for when all the businesses are forced to close. I make sure I make the rounds and eat at one of our regular places, help to keep the mom and pops places going. Most can do take-out, though a few just aren't set up that way.
Been hearing about how only "essential" businesses can stay open in other states - and then find out abortion clinics and marijuana shops are considered essential. Geez.

Walmart was better stocked today - they are stocking as fast as they can. Most items I wanted were available. Though there were no human cashiers available. I had to use the self check out. Just hate using those mindless things.

Went to Sams today with the wife. They are open from 7:00 to 9:00 just for seniors. Got there at 7:00 and the line was around the corner of the building. Had a woman behind me trying to cut in front me with a cart. By the time we got to the asswipe ilse it was almost empty. we had to buy 45 rolls in a package. Think we are good to 2025 now. Half a cart and 185.00 dollars later we out the door. Wife says we are all set for at least a month now.

Went to the last DVD rental place in Tucson today. A bit of a drive, and it's easy to spend a bundle with all the selection they have. Grabbed a bunch of movies, figured with most everything closed the Mrs. and I can watch movies.
Surprisingly, they added a full service bar about 2 years ago. Were making a ton of money with it - actually the alcohol sales were subsidizing the DVD rental and keeping the whole place going! But now it's shut down.
Usually movie rentals on Thurs are for one full week - that's been extended to 2 weeks. Plenty of time to watch the feature, special bonus clips and all.  :great:

Good to see everyone is still kicking. As for me, I can’t complain. Still Conductoring. Conductor Jr. is doing great. In remission and getting closer to his old self all the time. Not completely out of the woods yet. Still has 11 more months of chemo, but the Doctors anticipate a full recovery and he has a great long term prognosis.

Haven’t bought any tools forever. Until this week I hadn’t even had a chance to do anything in the shop. It’s like a paused my whole life over a year ago and just now hit play. Life has been a struggle. Mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially, but you’ll not hear me bitch. We’re making it and sometimes making it is enough.

Glad you had a good anniversary George -- congrats! Around here things are dead, and you know it's bad when my wife and daughter are looking forward to a trip through the drive-thu McDonalds to get a shake and fries later on today. What a deal!!!  --- LOL

Yeah, I just told my wife that she's a cheap date! Take out and rental movie and I'm set! :))

Oh, we also made the trip across town to the only Cheesecake Factory in town. They were open for take-out only. The girl was running frantic with the phone and getting previous orders together, and apologized for the delay. I told her, "Don't worry hon. I'm celebrating my anniversary today, and after 21 years I can wait for my cheesecake!" Everyone laughed - and when we got home we found she had specially packaged our slices with extra whipped cream and candles. Nice touch.

Yup , so far we going good down on the other island to where Rural is, roads are nice and quiet with only minimal traffic , not sure what will happen if we start to have cases inside our bubble in the industry, could be that the apples get left on the trees to rot , surely hope it doesn’t come to that ......this has been interesting for us to follow in NZ...... https://covid19map.co.nz/

Rural is in the Bay of Plenty and I’m currently in the Nelson Marlborough region.

I had new rear tires put on the truck last week, and they had a tape barrier that you had to stand behind. I had to go back this am (faulty valve seal) and they had put up a row of off-road tires in front of the counter, making you stand back. Seemed to work well, wasn't really noticable, and doesn't hurt advertising.

I am guessing we will see more of that, people working around the whole thing, and  gradualy deciding that more things are "essential." People will get tired of these shutdowns in areas with few infections, while cities like NY will become less and less desirable. Life will go on.

I just read about it. That governor of yours is a real piece of work.

Our gov just extended our state lockdown through April. But honestly I don't expect it to be lifted then. I think now that they've started this control freakism it isn't going to stop. Been checking in with friends all around the country and it's pretty much the same everywhere.

This social isolation shit is going to be the death of me. Mrs. Conductor is going to work me to death. In the past 5 days I’ve rolled 5 gallons of Barn & Fence paint, 7 gallons of porch stain, spread 30 bags of mulch, de-commiefied 2 ATV’s, changed the oil in 3 ATV’s and 1 Tractor, installed lights on my truck, finished laying tile in my shower (finally), and there’s no end in sight.

It's been quiet around here. Most of the "Honey-Do" list items were done early on in the year. I did an oil change on the family fleet just for the heck of it because most of the vehicles were nearing the 5K mile interval, but that was about it. I've been working in the shop mostly on my own stuff -- havin' some fun being alone in my garage and machine shop. Mrs. GF doesn't bother me when I'm in the garage; although she will offer to make me a pot of coffee and bring out a snack when I run out.

I went to Ace Hardware last week and they had six foot marks on the floor and sneeze guards for the cashiers.   We are on the 2nd week of homeschooling, kids had music lessons via Zoom.  Wife works remotely with busy office tasks.  Take a walk occasionally.  Youngest and I rode the Harley for a half hour yesterday.  Been cleaning on my shed and house garage, will have to go out and buy 20' x 40' worth of metal roofing to fix 6 holes in the roof from tree damage. Changed oil in the van today, wife took dogs to the vet (vet picked up/delivered dogs at back of van) and hauled home $200 worth of groceries.  That is one thing we are spending more money on is food since we have not eaten away from home for 2 weeks (school or restaurants).

Still working, was a ton of jobs in the pipeline when the corona hit the fan. Little leery of staying in hotels, no food available or at least very few options on the road for me and my diet. Working outside for the most part. Think that is better than inside but who knows. Today its pouring so day off. Went to home depot and bought some painting supplies in case everything gets shut down. Some rooms need paint so that would keep me busy.

Grocery bill definitely bigger.   Trip to JD for mower parts, rebuilt the mower deck, nice little job.   Been cutting brush around the farm buildings, dragging it to the burn pile.  After we got two of the saws running.  A job  to be done before the leaves  set on.  Put up the trim work on the laundry room  remodel, now to put down the counter tops.  Never was one to hang around town, so am pretty content out here in the hills.  Now  to see if there is tp at the next grocery trip.

I had to get out yesterday. I went to the Indian Rez for gas. $ 1.16 a gallon. I should have brought a few gas cans. I stopped at the Dollar General and bought the last 24 pk of TP. Then I stopped at Aldi's and grabbed the last 12 pk of TP. A woman asked if it was the last pack as she was almost out at home. At checkout , she was behind me. As I was bagging my stuff I tossed 4 rolls in her cart when she wasn't looking. Maybe someone will do that for me someday.

The wife has a buzzer button mounted next to the door at work and they keep the door locked. Too many damn tool salesmen and solicitors would just walk in otherwise. A sign tells them by appointment only but good luck trying to get one.

a local rehab hospital just had 11 of their staff test positive. Aint too good when the professionals cant keep from getting it....

They put emergency operations in place yesterday. we start working 20 hour weeks till further notice. I'm working Monday, Tuesday and 1/2 days Friday. The plant manager is working the other times. And we're not supposed to visit with one another. They don't want us both sick. I figure two days to get everyone lined out for the week and on Friday I can make sure the manager didn't screw anything up before the weekend.  :lol_hitting:

Yeah, that what concerns me - doctors and nurses keep getting it. Maybe it's because they're surrounded by it all day, but dang, you'd think they'd be wearing the right stuff and know what not to do.

And police and fireman are coming down with the thing, too. Not good if crimes or fires surge, especially Southern Arizona going into spring and the wildfire season. Dumb people (or arsonists) can cause alot of harm with first responders down.

Thanks for asking. I'm here. I have had trouble with email lately and have not received any email in several weeks.

We recently moved and have been working on the house a lot. We needed a place and didn't have time to paint or do the floors and stuff before we moved in so the work load here is pretty tall.

Then a friend had some major surgery with a lot of complications so I went and spent a lot of time there to give him a hand. In truth the main reason I left was I was afraid if I waited too long I wouldn't be able to get back.

Tucson is starting to look weird.
Almost overnight, just about every store I go into has the cashiers area boxed in with clear acrylic sheets - like the bank. And the blue tape lines are gone - now they have brightly colored placards glued to the floor with two footprints saying "Stand here" or something.  :a102:
Had a lady who knows me wave from like 20 feet away - I guess she wanted to stay safe?  :017:

Paper aisle was still pretty much decimated. One brand of toilet paper, maybe 12 packages. That was it. And the really weird thing? In the can aisle - the light kidney beans were gone, but right next to the sticker on the shelf the dark kidney beans are full.   Every brand, same story. What gives?  :-[

We are down to the sacrificial essential personnel at the office. 8 out of 50 are still here, I love it. Coffee pot is always full, TP is abundant, the front desk girl doesn't have the heat set to hell, phones are not ringing, and drama is next to zero. Traffic is non existent and I can get home nearly 10 min earlier every day.

Yeah, that seems to be the process with getting a new washing machine motor here.

Getting alot of little projects done around the house. I make sure and get out once a day to buy lunch or go grocery shopping. keeps the truck from sitting too long....and I can get away from the four walls.

Ohio says they will be moving into normal operation in stages starting 5/1. Just rip the band aid off already, people are sick of this government stay at home order crap. My households everyday operation has changed at all (besides having to use some industrial style TP) but I feel bad for some of these single moms that had a job or two tending bar or waiting table at restaurants, they have to be hurting.

^^^^^^^^I have to disagree, I think reopening in stages is the smart thing to do, especially in crowded areas.  Folks tend to be stupid and opening up all at once is sure to spread the virus quicker IMO.

I do agree that a lot of folks will be hurting and it will take some time to get caught up.  Hopefully some assistance will be forthcoming to those truly in need

In crowded areas yes it might make sense, in rural Ohio where where tractors and cattle out number people 2 to 1 it does not. Honestly most things are open here, the only things that are not seem to be restaurants and barber shops. I honestly feel if we dont open things back up soon nationally the solution is going to be worse than the problem ever would have been.

IMHO I think this coronovirus thing is going to turn into a flu-type recurring ailment. Now that it's out of the lab it's beyond stopping, and I think everyone is eventually going to get it. When they develop a vaccine - if they develop a vaccine - it'll be a yearly thing like the flu and everyone will be forced to get it in order to go to work. (They are working on getting some immunity card so everyone can "prove" they've had the vaccine and are "safe").
All this talk of flattening the curve was not meant to save lives - it just spreads the new cases out over time so that the hospitals weren't overrun. The same number of people get the disease just not all at once. By them closing down the economy the whole country is getting slammed all at once and causing a collapse - and they seem just fine keeping up. Which is the exact opposite of what they're claiming about flattening the curve medically.   :017:

Doing great here. So far the wife and employees are doing good with no virus cases in the shop and they are busy. Hope it stays this way.

I won't argue the real rural areas can be open but how do you make that work and not think other folks are going to to wait?

From what I'm seeing we will all eventually get this crap, just a matter of when. The folks susceptible to it should remain cooped up but I don't see us hiding from it forever. initially it was to flatten the curve so medical facilities could keep up with the victims but at some point you have to agree that ship sailed. How long are we gonna wait for a vaccine? A year, two, ten??? then what?

Like all viruses, it will eventually mutate to a point where previous vaccines are no longer effective. If it is a custom designed virus that escaped from their labs, you just know that they built strong mutation capabilities into that DNA so that it will have the most devastating impact over time.

Good news is that it is susceptible to high temps -- Come-on Summer!!!

Right now people are outside, moving around and doing things. I am guessing that the stages will be ignored by most people and things just start returning to normal without goverment setting the pace.

Great! Tucson is forecasted to hit 90 by next week (a bit early) so higher risk folks should be a bit safer.

Well, more unanticipated changes for me since March. Actually a lot of changes since early December. I think I shared that I lost the job I started in January of 19 on December 4th of 19 (due to continued poor health) I was out of work until the end of February then began another position with an old and dear friend in a small metal fabrication facility, (think CAT sub-contractor) thought the position was less than ideal, small shop of roughly 60, 45-minute commute each way, considerably less money, much costlier and worse health insurance. Anyway, first he told me to work from home which I still appreciate, then he took a couple of hard financial hits and had to lay off about a dozen folks (a considerable percentage when his total employment number was roughly 60 to begin with of which I was one. He felt very bad about it and told me when things looked better he would give me a call if I was still available.

Well, the day he laid me off April 7th, I filed for unemployment, but was glad to find a position about 15 minutes from home with Northrup Grumann to apply for. I had a phone interview that went very well today and will do the in-person interview on Monday. I am so hoping this position comes to fruition since the pay would be considerably greater and more in line with the wages I was making a few years ago. Of course, given the company, benefits would be far better than my most recent situation so if everything goes well I will be working close to home  without a 45 minute to hour long commute at great fuel savings, vehicle wear and tear not to mention the wear and tear on me. Plus much beter health insurance.

Not to offend those that do not pray, but for those that do a word or two from those so inclined to "The Big Man" would be greatly appreciated!

I will report back on how things go for me. Oh ya, as far as Covid-19 goes the whole family has been hunkered down for weeks and we are all fine. I hope things are going as well for you guys.

Still kicking here. We went to Home Depot yesterday at 6am to avoid the lines and have a bunch of plants to get in the big pots today.

still here too. Work told us we were going to have to wear masks when dealing with the public, I'm fortunate I don't have public contact but I went online and ordered me a Trumpm2020 mask just in case. :lol_hitting:

Still kicking in the desert.

Supposed to break 100 today, and forecast to be 102-103 by Tuesday. that's about a month ahead of normal. Usually don't break into triple digits till the end of May. Got the Mastercool evap up and running - we'll be needing it. Missed sealing up the electric plug box last fall, as there's a thriving wasp nest in it.  :41: I'll wait another couple of weeks till all the little buggars hatch and fly off, then clean it out ans seal up that sticking hole!

I need a haircut. Too bad I'm not a lib politician who can break the rules and call up my barber and have him open up his shop to give me a trim. The wife won't cut my hair as she says it'll look worse than it does now, but I told her she couldn't make it that bad. I wake up looking like Albert Einstein already! :D

Haircuts are easy for me. The wife takes the horse clippers and using a #3 guide takes it all off. I like a #2 cut but she says it is too short. ::)

Sitting around just tired of being sick. I had a UTI a month ago and they took care of that, but an over zealous kidney doctor made some changes to my meds that caused problems. I got my cardiologist to straighten it out.

Sorry to hear that, Noel. I've got issues with several doctors myself. So called "specialists".  :41:

We are good here, all in the family are well.  Working everyday though things have slowed a bit.

Time to get folks back to work, a little at a time.

It will be interesting to see how many folks will either be allowed or forced to work from home after this is over.  Companies can realize some savings by not providing office space and it would take some burden off the roads.

Did I mention I really like the lack of traffic, especially at rush hour.

Ray, how is traffic in Northern Virginia if you have been out at rush hour?
