Title: Blast from the past
Post by: highland512 on January 04, 2023, 08:28:02 PM
A few weeks ago I picked a beater to drive back and forth to work. I had to fix a few things and it’s been pretty reliable but I still wanted a basic kit to carry behind the seat. Not wanting to unload my main truck I hit the local pawn shops and found this gem for $35.

The only thing it’s missing is a 3/8 deep 14mm and had some extra extensions. All USA made v series ratchets and G1 series sockets. I added some standard and mm wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer to a old dewalt bag. Now I cruise in my clunker with peace of mind and grin on my face.

35 bucks?

thief........

ha, i was a late adopter of cman tools. never had em growing up and discovered them later. i know some like the old stuff and for sure the old ratchets were better than the last production. sockets and wrenches. the later sockets with off corner engagement were and absolute bargain. wrenches with off corner engagement and milled beams were also excellent value.

Hey highland, I might have a deep 14mm in 3/8" drive. I went on a acquisition kick 2 years ago, grabbing any G code Craftsman metric sockets I could find as I saw supplies drying up after Sears went under. (I felt G-code sockets were a solid code, nothing later did I grab). Got some duplicates - I might have a 14mm. 6 or 12 pt. preference?

What a great find -- Congrats! It pays to scrounge sometimes. That is a great set for $35.

For sure see what you have, 6 or 12 it doesn't matter. I am going to keep looking on my end as well.

This is not the good stuff but it will do the job just fine. Im guessing this is early 2010's vintage, what ever era of craftsman had the I'm passing a kidney stone colored chrome but no laser etched markings.
I have my grandfathers set of 3/8-1" raised panel combo wrenches from the late 80's early 90's, pretty darn good wrench's if you ask me. They reside in the do not use drawer of my box.

I dug thru my Craftsman stash and didn't find a spare 14mm deep to send you. I hit two places today and scrounged thru their socket bins but no-go. Sorry

Minus the ratchets that's a great grab for $35!

Couldn't agree more, the raised panel craftsman ratchets are slightly better than a stick at turning sockets. :))

A fella has to haggle them pawn shop employees down, plus having cash to put on the counter usually helps work them down even further. (original asking price was $50 which frankly I thought was a decent buy for usa made)

I have always been a fan of Diamond pliers and today while shifting through the junk pile at the local pawn shop I found this jewel. I also got a pair of 6” diamonds out of the package that look brand new. Now I’m debating since these are still in the oem package should I leave them in the package?

If you don't need them and are thinking of re-selling, you'll get more if you leave them as-is.

They'll never be new in the package again.  If you don't need them to use, consume the already opened pair & set those back for a rainy day.

Well you talked me into it (it didn’t take much convincing ) they will stay in the wrapper. It was the fist time I had really dug around this particular pawn shop. I went in for a finish nailer and walked with said nailer, 2 pairs of new diamond pliers, the missing 14 mm Chan socket I needed, 9mm raised panel sk wrench, and few other jewels. All for under $30, it made my week.

I was also finding quite a few full polish mm boney wrench’s. Anyone looking for those?

Amazing find - congrats! The fact that the packaging is in tact makes this a special find.  Unless you really need the pliers, I’d leave it alone and just display it.  —- So cool!’

Channelock bought out Diammaloy back in '93 or so, that packaging is already old enough to vote.

The back side of these are labeled triangle. Have any idea of what years that would have been?

In 1981 Diamond was sold to triangle who owned Utica, herbrand and Bonney.

The last workers were done in 94 and the building diamond occupied was torn down in 96.

I could not see in my quick search exact dates but I can only assume that by 94 cooper had the apex principle down and had acquired triangle and trashed all 4 brands.

I think one could pretty accurately date your pliers to that 82- 92. I can only assume those last workers wer sweeping the floors, packing the last inventory and liquidating contents of the building. Makes me sad thinking about it as I have a soft spot for diamond.

My memory is out of warranty, and stand corrected.   They, the (suits) in the offices sure messed up, this and other companies.  Will pick up Diamond, Diamond Caulk, and Diamalloy whenever I find them.  Got some old 12 in. adjustables with jaws nearly an inch thick.

ha, no problem. unless you go look it is damn hard to remember who bought and trashed what brand and then changed their name again so nobody will remember who else they trashed unless you go look again.

As to the Diamonds in the package, if you need them open them up and use them.  While they are worth more unopened, I doubt they will ever be worth a lot.

OTOH, if you like collecting them, keep them as is

Dont worry guys they are staying in the wrapper  :-*, slip joint plyers are one item I have many copies of. I will see if I can take some pictures of the back side tonight.

Great scores.

That set was a major bargain.
I don't like the later raised panel Craftsmans with the plastic QR button and lever, but the earlier pre Danahar ones are great tools.
A little clunky, but reliable and durable.

How's the Bonney set collaboration going? Full polish metric combos are a bit hard to find.

Well, the long ones are. I do tend to see some shorter combos around the web. The angle metric wrenches, though, are really rare - and expensive on the bay. If you guys are close to a full set check out Epsteins. They have straggler Bonney's for sale, maybe something to fill a hole.

As a kid of 16 I worked in an Ace hdw that sold the full line of Diamond, Crescent,  and Channelock pliers. I bought some of all three. They also exclusively sold Indestro sockets and wrenches. Bought virtually none of the Indestro tools thinking them inferior quality to Craftsman. Sad to admit that,  but hey, in my defense I was a 16YO kid and knew no better. Boy do I regret that, however it was 1977-78 and really I didn't have a lot of money to spare being I was only making minimum wage.  What adds to my regret is the fact that I got a 50% discount!

I'm betting that we've all been in that situation Herb; should have/could have, but didn't. I foolishly turned down a few great deals on premium tools that were offered to me by senior mechanics, but I decided to get "new" Craftsman instead. Granted, Craftsman was good quality in those days, but it couldn't compete with Snap-On, Hazet, Stahlwille, or MAC. Half a century later, and I could still kick myself for those fumbles -- LOL

Mechanics tools were pretty much not a thing to me until I was in my 20's.  At 14, I started mowing and maintaining a lot of my grandmothers house, so it was more hand/house/yard tools.  At 17, after my first job went away (owner divorce business closed), I bought a wheelbarrow from the local hardware store (wouldn't fit in the vehicle) and walked it the two miles back to grandma's house.  I worked at that hardware store for a couple months, until the owner realized he shouldn't have bought it, and was trying to sell it.  But I did learn a lot during that time. (still miss the key cutting machine)

At 16, when I had my first car, I tried to learn/realize what tools I would need, however there were some issues.  My parents, especially my father, didn't like me working on my vehicle (you can fix your stuff, when you get your own place to do it).  I didn't have a place to store much, so trunk/road tool kit.  Also the place that to me was known for tools, had stopped (Montgomery Wards), so the import stuff they sold was what I bought.  My tools were nutdrivers (came from a family that did a bunch of electronics work), a five screwdriver set, a made in India wrench set (that I still have most of, that were decent quality), oil filter wrench, and one of those $4.99 socket sets that I thought everyone pretty much had to buy a new one, every new project.
The few good tools were not mine, but grandma's (SK socket set) that stayed there for use on the house stuff.  Heck I didn't even have a power drill or saw until in my 20's, as my father was afraid and bad with them.
