Title: Back in my racing days...
Post by: Der Bugmeister on March 14, 2023, 07:33:02 PM
I used to bracket race my Beetle at the local track.  In '91 when I was president of the local VW club we organized a VW Car Show outside the track on the same day as the regular races, and put up a prize for the last VW to be eliminated.  As luck had it, we actually eliminated all the other cars and the final was between me and a quick Rabbit.  The Rabbit was fast even then - lexan windows and a lot of lightening already done but he eventually built it up to be an 11 second quarter mile car.  I forced him to break out and I won the day.

The track was about a 1/10th mile, not a full 1/8th unfortunately.  I typically ran about 6.7 seconds, 65 mph with 2nd gear wound out going through the traps.

If you don't want to see all the racing, my last couple of races are near the end followed by my victory burnout.  I had brought along some old tires just for that purpose.

Pretty cool Clay. That looks like a lot of fun. Brackets are always a great public draw around my neck of the woods as well.

I had a lot of fun with it back in the day.  The only problem was this was my daily driver at the time and to be competitive you have to push the car which leads to parts breaking.  That eventually became inconvenient and expensive.  When that engine finally gave up the ghost, I replaced it with a smaller 1641 that I rebuilt overnight so I could get to a show the next morning.  Never raced it again, but I did race regularly for a couple years at least.

Even drove it down to Seattle International Raceway for the Bugnationals one year and won Street 1 plus came runner up in King of the Hill.  That was a quarter mile strip, went through the traps in 16 seconds, doing just over 80 mph with third gear wound out.  Those tall driving gears really slowed things down!
