426 Hemi build

So I have a 1970 Barracuda stashed away . I`m in the process of selling of some of my project cars to slim down the herd.
I was thinking about putting some of the selling funds towards a old school 426 hemi for the cuda.
I already have a 1970 hemi cuda 4 speed and a Dana 60 rear end.
So just for shits and giggles I looked up a new motor from Mother Mopar ...just a smidge under $20,000.
Does anybody here know anything about building these Elephants? It would have to be cheaper to piece one together. I think Cat builds these and from what I`ve been told they are not put together too well.

You can bet your last dollar that any part you want that has 426 hemi associated with it costs like triple. Go shopping for parts .........youll find out real quick that Elroy has no clue.

Wait till you see what any performance manifold for one will cost and the trick manifolds like the cross rams I could build the engine for my TR6.

But worth it when you fire that puppy up.

Yeah there's a reason their the "Holy Grail" of engines. As much as we all dream of a huge deal quad hemi poking out the hood. I'd go with a strong running 440. A well tuned 440 or 383 will walk a hemi on the street due to the hemi not having tons of off the line due to having man hole covers for valves.

Buddy of mine just sold 2 hemi with hemis, 70 hemi challenger and a 69 Bee with a hemi.  He paid dearly for some parts to finish the cars that had been sitting for 30 years.  The did bring decent money

Use an LS motor, thats what all the cool kids do now  ::)

My experience has been buying all of the parts and pieces gets mighty expensive when building a motor.

Just found out Mother Mopar no longer offers the hemi gen 2 crate motors :'(

jab,

A 383 small block (stroker) in a smallish Cuda would make a very potent street/strip ripper at a fraction of the cost of a BB 426 Cuda.  And it would make very nice grocery getter/daily driver to boot.

I`ve got a 69 coronet that's getting a 440 x 6 pac so the Cuda has to have an Elephant.
May be I pipe dream but im holding on to it.

I visited a family's establishment close to me with a great racing history.
I`ve done some trees for them in the past.
He said come back Monday arvo as he has a few bits lying around. O:-)

Unless you are going to assemble your own. I guess you have a competent machine shop in your area that wont screw up your expensive "hemi" parts.

I think a "recreation" is an excellent project, even if it has 528 cubes instead of the stock 426. Then there is the trans. You a row your own kinda guy or a stab n steer? A six speed is cool for cruising but a 727 with gear vendors would make drag week a dream. Might even need a vintage air system at that point. I've seen pix of the sonny Lenard BIG block with an ac compressor hanging off the front.

Sounds like a real cool project, but you know it isn't real without pix.

I wonder what one of those Bartons run. I bet you could get a late model 6.?l hemi for less. still be a hemi just a bit more streetable.

Found one, it`s a 67 freshly rebuilt just a little over stock with no intake.
Pretty much perfect for what I need.

I know the people that have it and trust the build quality. Tomorrow/ soon I`ll find out the price.
Prolly gunna be way outa my range but it don`t hurt to ask, it`s been there for a while .Was done for a customer that went another direction.

Slightly off topic, but I bought a 392 Hemi last April.  Scat Pack Challenger, 485 HP. I swapped the oem stick for a Barton shifter and uploaded the Tazer...I have not utilized line lock but I am pretty sure my son has...he rotated tires at 4k    :-\

Silly me, it has become his daily driver now that I replaced my truck.   But I got to spend the last two weeks with it, hard as I tried and hard as I drove it, damn if I couldn't get less than 13 mpg.    >:(
