Completed the SK socket set!
« on: November 13, 2021, 02:34:41 PM »
Took a bit longer than I thought, ended up costing me about $65 total. A similar new set is $176.

A few pieces are not era-correct, and the set includes 4 pieces I wanted that aren't OEM. But it's all here! 3/8" drive SAE shallow and deep socket set of USA-made S-K!

The set comes with a 3" extension. I added a 1 1/2" and a 6". (This is how my 1980 bought as new box was set up). I also added  a 1/4" ratchet with 3/8" head, plus a 3/8" to 1/4" adaptor so the set can use 1/4" drive sockets.
This presented a little bit of a fitment issue, so, came up with a way to get everything in there and have the cover fully close. I store the shorty extension and adaptor in the two  3/4" sockets. The long extension and 1/4" ratchet can then fit in the ratchet chamber. Easy peazy!

an awesome set with just the right additions,

You think so? Honestly I never knew there were extensions longer than 6" when I was a young lad. (My dad didn't have any longer ones). So I figured with these 3 lengths I could get 10.5", and the few times I needed more I got another 6"er! It was only much later that I discovered 20" extensions and the like. Boy, did I work myself to death in those early days.   :-[

yup, i think so. those three extensions combined with the standard and deep sockets will get you out of the vast majority of situation one may encounter.

Looks great.
I love sets, and of course I love getting as much as I can into a set.
If I can comfortably fit something I believe will add useful capability I do.

It feels great to have a goal.with some kind socket set and eventually achieve it piece by piece,  even better the first time you break the set out and it proves to be very handy.

Great set George -- and damn handy. I think that was SK's most popular set back in the day. The local auto parts store used to sell them back in the 1970s, and IIRC they were a top seller. Bought all of my SK stuff from them.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

When I found the basically NOS box awhile back I had a few of the pieces scattered around. Figured maybe I could complete the set just for fun. Then I found out about S-K's sale to the Chinese and sped up the project. Seeing how Craftsman prices have gone I hedged my bet S-K would do the same, so, I tried to beat the rush.

I have about a third of a set of S-K metric sockets (about half of the shallows). Finding those has been alot harder. Now I can devote my full attention to that project.

Well, I found some more S-K today! Almost completed my set of shallow metrics. 10-18, missing the 19 still but have a 7mm. They will fit in a used 1/4" socket tray S-K for now. Also grabbed a 5/8" deep and a 11/16" shallow.
Also found a classic green and white bit driver. Don't really like the thinness of the shank but it's the one I had when I started out. Anybody have a spare screw cap they could send me? I could re-tap the handle to a common thread but that would be a last resort.

Those threaded caps "tend" to be common threaded amongst brands. For a while, I was picking up cheap screwdrivers to fill the empty holes I had at the weekend dirt markets. I dont have any extra caps.

I figured that the thread was a shared one among drivers. I usually keep nic-naks like that in a bin but I dug thru my 3 cans and I don't have one.  :-[

I don't know.  :(   I got so many packages coming in for so many different "projects" I can't remember all the contributions. If so, thanks!

I have a cap from a WF Craftsman I could send you if it'll work.

Hickory sent an 8mm S-K socket along with the driver cap, so now I'm only lacking the shallow 9mm and 19mm to finish off the set.

Then I have to get going on the deep metrics. :-[

I didn't even know you needed that socket, only that I didn't need it.
I'm glad I sent it to you for sure.

Repainted the outside of the small socket box, inside was pretty good. You can hardly tell a difference.
I'm going to make a strip to keep the sockets in line, and found that even a small stature Snap-On 3/8" ratchet wouldn't fit in the remaining space. So, put my pair of ratcheting wrenches with my home made hex-to-square adaptors in there, which have a thin profile. Being the SK metric shallow sockets are so short that they lend themselves well to tight areas.

Now just need to get a deep metric set.   :lol_hitting:

Here's a deep set that I was going to throw out, its been collecting so much dust from never having a socket turned even once.

I dunno....perhaps I should use it to prop up the '85 Cavalier in the front yard. Its been leaning on that one chipped cinder block that is shorter than the others for at least 20 years. The neighbors are getting mad at me.

 ;)
