Wonder what this sounded like...
« on: October 28, 2018, 03:24:36 PM »
....when it broke?

It's a 75mm Gray...must have been a lot of force. Otherwise new, it must have broke on the first job  :))

It was cheap at the flea today and no, I'm not going to seek warranty.

Also got this nifty wee Parker 21 ....

For such a big wrench that’s a wimpy handle they put on it.

It probably first sounded like a lot of money being flushed down the toilet followed by a course in some of the more vulgar expletives in the language.

How old is the wrench if you know.

Nice little vise.

Probably less than 10 years....could be a week old for all I know, but it is their most recent design.

On sale this week from Gray for only 677.72 each, Regular price 752.91

https://shopgraytools.com/collections/combination-wrench/products/12-point-metric-round-shank-combination-wrenches-15-offset-satin-chrome-finish?variant=1618746692

The Gray wrenches I grew up with wouldn't break like this ....they had flat handles similar to Snappy all the way up to the big sizes. Gray has been good to me and I think I might send a note/picture to their engineering dept this week. They might be interested.

To my untrained eye it looks like the wrenches are no longer forged in one piece. I suspect the forged ends are welded to the bar.

The vise is pretty sweet eh? She is soaking in oil right now...might just tart this one up a little and install her in the house workshop.

I just sold a bunch of octogenarians to a shop  needing big wrenches at about 2 bucks each.  Unbroken if well worn.   I was probably lucky to get that.

He has hacky helpers and knows big investment  will not result in better use of them.

I have been on the cheater pipes of breaking a few large tools and it sounds like -tink!- as half abandon the cheater pipe and one or two try to catch it.
Its never very spectacular.  Until the boss sees it and blows a gasket.  Then its way over the top.

I rather like smaller vises.  That one has style.

Yiipes! That is an expensive wrench. I have limited exposure to Gray (mostly what I do have is from you) but it seems high quality.

Make a pretty neat wallhanger. By the way - I'm with you I wouldn't warrant it either

Perfect! I'm even enjoying some iced coffee at the moment. Just glad I hadn't been drinking it when I read that.

Do you think Grey would warranty it ?

I have no doubt that they would honor the warranty if I had purchased it new and it broke in regular service.

I sent Gray a note and described the break. They asked for detailed photos.

When I sent the pix I was very clear that I  was not seeking warranty....the photos were for their information only. I also mentioned that their old style of wrench would not have failed like this three piece welded wrench.

If I hear back from them I'll post it here.
