Oak log mantle project

(1/4) > >>

jabberwoki:
I scored this nice piece of Gary Oak the other day , i`ve been wanting a nice big straight piece for quite a while.
I had one about 10 years ago stashed but someone didn't get the memo that i wanted it and cut it up for firewood.
I took it to a place locally and had the guy square it up leaving as much of the log intact to dry as a big piece.
I`ve got it in the shop now on 3 car dollies so i can move it out of the way when i need too (it`s farkin heavy thou).
Got the ends painted with a clear log seal and the rest slathered in boiled linseed oil, could not find raw linseed oil in time.
The plan is to let it dry out and then cut it hopefully into 2 pieces and make a sweet mantle.

Magnificent piece of wood. Glad you were able to log in with it.

Nice piece of oak you have there. How long do you figure it will take to dry and do you have a way to measure moisture content?
