Title: 1965 Comet Caliente Convertible
Post by: Lookin4_67GalaxieConv on August 27, 2022, 11:02:07 PM
Several years ago I had a '65 Comet Caliente convertible.  Owned it for a little over five years then ended up trading it for a '59 Galaxie, which I still have.  The Comet was a good car, and maybe I should've kept it, but it needed a bit of a restoration which I wasn't up for at the time.  Anyways, I've kept my eye out for another one, as well as the '67 Galaxie convertible in my screen name, but leaned toward the Comet because of space considerations.  The Comet fits much better in my garage than a '67 Galaxie.

I'm in some Comet groups on Facebook and a couple of years ago struck up a conversation with a gentleman that lives a couple hours south of me.  He had a '65 convertible, along with a couple of '65 Cyclones.  He's getting on in years and was looking to downsize.  We met at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in December, 2020 and I saw the car in person.  I liked it a lot and seriously thought about buying it, but we couldn't come to terms on price.  At the time, it was easier not to buy it as I was still moving stuff from my old house to this one and needed the garage space.  So fast forward to this summer, the old house has long since been sold, and I was asking him some questions on a Comet hardtop for sale.  I asked if he still had the convertible, expecting him to have sold it, but he still had it.  He hadn't made much of an effort to sell it, but was planning on putting it on Facebook Marketplace.  I asked him what he was going to ask and he had come down on the price somewhat.  I told him I may be interested and a few weeks later, went to see it again.  This time we made a deal and I took delivery of it last week.  Feels good to have another one of these again.

The pics are from December 2020.  Big lug behind the steering wheel is me.

Looks great!  I think you're going to have many miles of smiles in that ride.

I was really interested in a 67 Caliente several years back, needed a full restoration and the timing wasn't right.  My place might be full of Cutlasses, but I still really dig the looks of that generation Comet.

In my opinion the Comets from 1960-67 are the collectible ones, with 1965 being the pinnacle.   The 1968 and '69 models were getting away from the Comet style and were essentially a Mercury Montego.  In 1970, there wasn't a Comet model, then the nameplate was brought back from '71-77 and slapped on what was a Ford Maverick.  All in all, they should've stopped after '67.

The '64s and '65s have similar body lines, but I've never been able to get past the '64 grill.  Reminds me of a Lincoln Continental.

Attached is a pic of a '64 and the first '65 convertible I owned.

Was comet a name only on Fords?  I remember an older Comet, driven by a girl in high school, that had those fender ornaments that looked like targets.  I thought it was a Chrysler product though.

That’s a pretty cool ride jabber.

Both of them are neat cars.
Can 67 Falcons with 429 Super Cobra Jets play nice ? Granted, this is NOT, Elroy's car but......

.......But it is pushing that 3.70 Detroit locker that Elroy set up several years ago. That was documented on the "old board" before it turned into a Taco Stand :hee20hee20hee:
