They said the fire was 6,600 acres this morning. It is now reported as 22,000 acres or 33 square miles at 7pm. Woke up to ash coating everything and it has been falling on us all day. No containment but plenty of evacuations in the mountains with red flag warnings and critical fire danger in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the region.

This pic was taken at 6:30pm looking west over the Sierras and this smoke cloud is over us.

Is that the sun or the moon behind the smoke in the middle of the picture?

That is the sun at 6:30pm. We did only get temps in the 80's instead of 90's since the smoke cut the sun all day.

Just checked updates and now they say the fire area could see thunderstorms with plenty of lightning starting at 11pm tonight. We could see them by midnight but unless this smoke clears we won't know they are here until we get lightning and thunder. Visibility is 2 miles at best.

Midnite, is fresh water plentiful in NZ?  Curious as I would assume it takes a lot to irrigate crops.

Where we are in the Mid Atlantic, fresh water is not a problem but in the Western US it is a big concern

Still no containment on the fire south of us. They have been reporting the size at 39,045 acres since yesterday but the northeast portion of the fire crossed into NV last night. One of the wife's employees had to evacuate yesterday morning. My sister and her husband have fire evacuees staying at their house in Lake Tahoe.

We are ready to accept any large animals that need to be evacuated if the fire moves north along the mountains and into our valley. People will want to get their horses and such out early and not wait until the last minute and we have an empty barn so we can help.

They were able to get the large airtankers back on the fire yesterday as the wind shifted and cleared smoke from the north and western front of the fire. Saw a DC-10 and BAE-146 tanker circling the house and then dropping on the fire and could see the retardant from here.

OK, this isn't tool related, but it was a little project I've been wanting to do.
Do you ever buy those 4 inch diameter candles? You burn them, them make a hole down the center maybe 1/3 of the candle, and then are done. Wait a minute! You spend say $15 for a decorative candle and you end up tossing 1/2 to 2/3 of it? That just ticked me off.
So I bought a small metal pot, cut up the remaining candle fragment into small pieces, and melted them on the stove. Used the cardboard center tube from a roll of paper towels, dropped a cotton string down the center, then poured in the liquid wax. Filled up the tube! Put it in the fridge to harden, then spiral peeled off the tube. Now just have to find a way to secure it in a glass stand and I've got another whole candle. Nice aroma, too.

And they thought they were gonna get the best of me!  :D

Just light the candle, tip it over to drip wax into glass stand and jam the candle into it
