May Elroy Seek Your Recommendation
« on: October 21, 2020, 04:08:41 PM »
The power steering pump on the '04 GMC Canyon is noisy. Pump needs to be replaced. Seeking your recommendation on a puller / installer for the serpentine pulley. Please advise accordingly

The power steering on my '04 Astrovan is starting to feel a bit funny. Maybe it's the pump?

But I have no way of doing that kind of job myself. I'm preparing myself to have the car mechanic appropriate my stimulus check. :38:

The puller they sell at HF or the auto part stores work pretty good. I'm not sure how long it would last in a shop setting tho.

The puller part of that set works pretty good, the installer side can be a PITA tho.

This is a sad fact, I finally have given up to the fact that china made crap from big names doesn't seem to be any better china made crap from HF.

I purchased the gear puller from HF to use on the crank pulley on my Oliver motor. It did the job I needed it for and now lives in the bottom drawer of the tool box.

I have the same set as HF, but branded Astro Pneumatic. I does the job, and has installed several pulleys. That said, many of the toot truck sets are now also imports from China and Taiwan.

Probably too late to help. I faced the same issue recently and broke two pullers trying to do the job. The first a brand new never used Lisle set, the second an older OTC set that I also had. Well I contacted Lisle for a replacement part for my set and they were super to deal with.

They replaced the broken piece from my old set, then did me one better. Eddie Lisle himself sent me their new design puller which is absolutely bullet proof totally free! The new design set cost about $80 I think but is the best design of anything I could find. If you need a pulley puller installer set for a power steering pump it is the only way to go!

This is the set: https://www.lislecorp.com/specialty-tools/pullers-and-installers/no-slip-pulley-puller
You boys better hold on cause I'm gonna have to stand on it!

Lisle set looks nice.  Pressure screw is the weak link judging from how many bad ones I have seen in used sets I have bought.

ALWAYS LUBE YOUR PULLERS BEFORE YOU USE THEM :91: :41:

Elroy is pleased to report that ASTRO is Elroy's best friend and performed well during our recent pump exchange. That pulley was a lot harder to remove than to reinstall. Greasing both the thrust bearing and the screw thread prior helped ensure a smooth operation.
