Name this Nut!
« on: May 04, 2021, 03:03:46 PM »
No not me.  :smiley_confused1:

This particular nut fits over the shafts and is used to hold the faceplate on one model of Bendix VW radio I have.  Never seen another like it and would like to find a source.

So what is the proper name for it?

Bendix probably had those drilled and countersunk to their specs. Wouldn't be hard to make if you have some machinery and a drill press at minimum.

What is the thread ? Is it possible that it’s a pipe thread ? It’s hard to gauge the dimensions from the photo but could it be made by cutting and modifying a brass pipe fitting?

Sorry I don't know anything about foreign cars. Maybe email the source provided.

Maybe try Wolfsburg West. They specialize in aircooled VWs. If they can't help they probably know who can.

I'm thinking it's a type of collar nut although they all seem have internal rather than external threads.

FYI - This nut is for the Bendix version of the 1968 Sapphire IX radio available as a dealer-installed option on VWs and the only radio I know of that uses them.  There is also a Motorola Sapphire IX version which is internally quite different using a standard thin nut that attaches over the shafts to hold the faceplate.  I was contacted by someone to see if I had any left and could only find one in the radio donor pile.

The smallest I've ever seen is 1/2" or 7/8" outside diameter
