Might be the answer for Chomper.
« on: June 15, 2021, 07:04:01 PM »
https://portland.craigslist.org/clc/hvo/d/colton-detroit-diesel-generator/7336621298.html

So i`ve had a bad ich to own a Detroit diesel and i need power for chompers big motor.
It`s $1500 but i`d only consider it at 1000.
Trouble is i know eff all about detroits and generators, it they both worked it would be sweet tho.

That would be cool and I bet could be made to work well but likely will need attention because of its age.

Just belt up the DD straight to old Chomper, No need for a generator or lectric motor.

Thats a pretty cheap Detroit if it starts and runs. The genny is 3 phase so its going to have limited appeal to most. Looks to be an Onan by the color so it may be able to be mult tapped for other voltages but at a lessor rating. The DD is still fully supported with all parts still available. Keep it full of oil and enough fuel and it will run forever. But feeding it oil and fuel will be a full time hobby. :lol_hitting:

So it`s 25 KW .
2 questions. Can it be adapted for single phase output and is 25KW enough to keep a house humming if the power goes out?

25kw should run your house well

As to can it make single phase, it might but you can always run a transformer.  Course that could be costly for a big one

Yes and maybe.  :D

25KW is more than enough to run a house. BUT you may not be able to get a full 25kw out of it if your not running 3p. Depending on how its wired. Some generators came as reconnectable for different voltages and some came as 3P 480v only. You would need to get the mod and serial # off the set to find out for sure. There are a couple of guys over on Smokstak.com that are pretty sharp on those old Onans and can probably direct you on what you have. if you can get the data plate info.

Theres even a few guys over there that are damned sharp on the DD.

I got a clutch set up for it ifn you want to just belt it up to Chompy and bypass all that lectric nonsense. :lol_hitting:

Tempting on the clutch but even the 1-71 is too big to mount on Chompers frame.
It is a duel voltage set but the guys no to helpful on more info ill see if he can snap i pic of the gen label.

Well i let the add expire and waited a  while then contacted him to see if it was still for sale.
He replied that it was and to make an offer so i hit him at 800.
This is the reply.
That is a little low,as it is in very good shape. hardly run since new. Was used only for a greenhouse backup, but never put into service except to test the system once a year. this is according to the people at the greenhouse, but 800.00 would o.k.

Sooo we`ll see what happens as it`s in Portland.
