Double square / 8pt driver bit - who knew?
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:48:04 PM »
Taking a closer look at my cargo trailer, I wondered why my hex driver bits (SAE or metric), nor the Torx drivers seemed to fit snugly in the fastener heads for the external panels. Upon using a magnifying glass, i counted 8 points, and instantly thought of my (never used), Enderes multi-Robertson bit driver. Dang! Just what the Dr ordered. I had a few fasteners I wanted to snug up.

Now, I'm off to find the bona-fide 8pt version just to ensure the 4 sided version wont slip.

Learned something new today about the 8pt versions.

Here's a pic, and how from afar you might think it was a Torx.

I had a fastener like that once and all I could do to remove it was jam a flat blade screwdriver In it.
No it wasn't good for the fastener but I got it removed then back on, whatever it was I had been working on.

Always lookin' to learn

Ha, I didn't know that they made double square drive fasteners. Or 8 point bits. It must be for security purposes or something proprietary (they just don't want you messing with them). With all the various allen profiles out there you'd think they'd just use one that was common.

I have a set of double square sockets for square head bolts on fan blades - or outdoor water spigots missing their handles.

My 03 VW commuter car is covered in those rotten things. Torx and double square everywhere when you least expect it. I just used it as an excuse to feed the tool habit and buy more sockets. lol

Went to my parents house to finish up prep work to sell it. I walked in the back yard and found a square drive driver lying on the deck and wondered what the heck? Then I looked at the kitchen window and saw a buggered up screw. It seems someone tried to remove the screws that hold the fixed window pane but had the wrong size driver that was too small. I called the cops and filed a report and the cop did a walk through and mentioned the only thing he saw that could be stolen was the microwave on the counter. We had emptied out the rest of the house.

A friend who was a cop told me that the best thing you could do to stop burglars was to replace the screws holding the fixed pane with rivets.

y'alls thieves don't know how to use a brick?  ;D

We had a hunting cabin out of George West that we never locked. we just didnt leave anything of value behind. If it was locked they'd break out the window. unlocked they would visit and go. We left food and water for the illegals. it would be gone within a few days.

VW has used triple square for a long time, at least on the CV joints. The Type III's used triple square on the CV joints and air cooled bugs used triple square on the CV joints when they went from the swing axles and that all happened mid 60's or so.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

Case closed, the bit arrived, and on my first round to the store (it was ordered online), they couldn't find it. A few hours later they called, and I got a gift certificate for my inconvenience when I picked it up.

Shameless pic of my Enderes Robertson multi-bit driver along with the XZN (triple square) bit set provided for those needing
toolage porn on a Thursday.

My cousin just bought a 2015 VW and it is covered with triple square fasteners.

What would be a good triple square set to give him as a Christmas present?

Thanks Ron.

Edit:
Shoot I can never type any thing that makes sense.

Oldnslo I purchased those triple square sockets off ebay instead of the one you listed because of the improved plastic cases. The sockets look like the ones in the link you posted.
Thanks again.

Glad you found some.

You can "edit" a prior post. See the upper right area of any post you create? It says modify. Select, and cank away at whatever changes you need to make.
