ANTIQUE ELECTRIC/AIR TOOLS / Re: Older B&D cordless drill

Well, tried popping it apart and several plastic parts just disintegrated. Battery case, brush holders. And internal corrosion was pretty extensive. tried saving the chuck but it's not removeable. I figured if all else failed I'd get a 1/4" chuck. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Done, and over the finish line.

Load leak down test performed, and after 24hrs there was no drop. New decal ordered and on the way. I'll not install that right away, I may just keep that tucked away for later use.  In my research, the red color had me perplexed, and turns out this is a SnapOn (yes, made by Lincoln), in 2.5T. Jack #YA700B. If I do repaint, it will be in red again to retain the provenance.

What makes the S/O 2.5T different than a Lincoln 2T? Your guess is as good as mine, other than perhaps a limit adjustment on the power unit. They both are anchors when picking up.

That museum is pretty interesting.  Never went beyond basic geometry myself, due to a couple of teachers that did their best to sour me on math.  In high school there were the upper end kids that were given trig and calculus, wore their long slide rule holsters as a badge.  Have picked up 2 slide rules at thrift stores as curiosities.  Just found a 6 inch that is marked USAF, made for using on a glass table analyzing aerial photos.

ANTIQUE ELECTRIC/AIR TOOLS / Older B&D cordless drill

Found this drill at a surplus store. After 2 weeks it was still there, so I spun the mechanism. Not seized. Chuck was rusty but not locked up. So I grabbed it. $3
Got it home and inserted a Makita battery into it (it fit surprisingly). Pulled the trigger and it ran. So it's worth attempting to save it. Will disassemble, clean, and grease. Corrosion to be removed. Now all I have to do is get a battery to work. Might have to try and charge the old B&D pack with my makita charger. (Keep a close eye on it while it charges). If not I have another 9.6 volt pack that might work.

Would like to get it operational - then use it as my bench drill for servicing other drills.

MACHINE SHOP / Re: Another tool brand gone the way of the dodo!

A few weeks back while working in Wichita I stopped at the Yardstore and bought 2 12" 4r grooved rules and a 24" 4r grooved rule too. I head that way again on Thursday and belive I am going to swing by there again and add an 18" 4r rule to buy the last grooved rule I intend to buy.

I way have mentioned it in an earlier post, but until supply evaporates, the Yardstore sells the same grooved rules as HJE if you are looking for the traditional 4r measures in 12", 18", and a rapidly dwindling number of 24" grooved rules for considerably less than HJE. However,  unlike HJE, the Yardstore does not sell 4" & 6" grooved rules.

Regardless where you choose to buy grooved rules just know that I believe it quite likely buying new or seconds USA made grooved rules will not be an option within the next few years.

It's always nice working with cleaned and freshly painted parts.

A wright of passage when I was young was getting a BigAzz Channellock pliers from my dad. One of my prized possessions. I don't and haven't yet obtained any knipex. Looked at em at the home center but never pulled the trigger. I like fancy(expensive) tools as much as the next guy but Channellock has never let me down, so I haven't found the need to spend more.
I bought my uncle a pair of the 480's and have been meaning to get myself a pair just because,  but I haven't had a need yet and am not sure whether I'd ever really need them.

I'd be doing it.

Mind you, after my current build apparently there's not a lot I won't do!
