Years ago I opened the door on the airplane and the piano hinge broke. I didn't want to rent a plane and wanted to use the company plane so I went to the maintenance hangar and borrowed a roll of duct tape. I latched and locked the left door and went all the way around the perimeter of the door with the duct tape. Climbing in through the right door was a pain but that worked for weeks until the new hinge came in. And yes, it held just fine at 200mph.

MAGA

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, it must be electrical.

The history of duct tape would be an interesting study.

The little I know is that the typical duct tapes of today pale in comparison to the original duct tape. Gorilla makes their own brand of duct tape - supposedly indestructibly strong adhesive. It has been said that it is what original duct tape was many years ago. The usual modern duct tapes - one even called Duck tape as most people think it is called - have such poor adhesives and weak webbing that it makes you have to put 2 or 3 layers on just to hold. You use more and thus have to buy more. And they've gotcha! :P

All I know is the duct tape my dad used in the 70's would pull the hair off your arm if you accidentally touched it. And forget about peeling it off of metal if you placed it wrong. All you could do was slice it with a razor and re-do it.

We used to get "gun tape" on the ships but it started disappearing in the early 90s as the procurement system changed.  What a pity.

This stuff was a dark olive green, mesh reinforced and strong adhesive.  This modern stuff is like post-it notes in comparison.

No doubt an FAA approved repair.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.
