the transmission clutch press
« on: April 24, 2020, 11:02:25 PM »
The post is 2' tall and the base is 8 by 12inches.  It holds down the springs so my boss can pull off the clips holding the pistons in the hydraulic clutches.

We used wrist pins and rods from hydraulics among some odd bits of metal from around the shop.  My boss had  a machinist make the fancy bits.

Damn handy tool if you do much trans work. I had to fab up a clamp to take apart the OD unit in my dodge trans. mine was a one and done thing but if I had more to do I would fab up one like this. nicely done. :bravo_2:

This relic from the second world war is what makes his projects.  It handles heavy plate and bits from 1/16 to 2.5" with equal precision.

Not everything it once had is intact but that autofeed function is just so cool.

He got four of the five clutches in the JD gearbox assembled pretty darn quick with nary a colorful phrase.  He is quite pleased with his toy.

The one that inspired his is half the size of this one.  In every aspect.  He doubled thickness on everything and went sheer overkill again.

Now the other guy wants to build another copying the big one.

That's a nice job on the press. Sure beats the 3 hand cluster screw trying to use prybars.

Using the drill downfeed is slick and I don't know why I hadn't thought of it. I use one big drill at work as a glue press occasionally. The handwheel feed would be just fine getting a clutch pack squeezed. Nice tips!

A shot of paint to finish it up.  The boss is happy now.

Pretty good fab work -- and real nice to have when you consider the cost of an OEM or even aftermarket tool. Well done Brian --

The design and scale of it are his.  The post and two wrist pins are Cat parts so Cat yellow fits it well.

I did some weld on it and mounted it to the table with Cat bolts.  We have a lot of those around the shop.

Our shop junk is costly Cat parts.  Lol!  About 80 tons of it somewhere here.

I always try to paint up my shop built tools. Keeps them from getting tossed on the scrap pile by accident.
