Oak log mantle project
« on: September 28, 2020, 08:35:13 PM »
I scored this nice piece of Gary Oak the other day , i`ve been wanting a nice big straight piece for quite a while.
I had one about 10 years ago stashed but someone didn't get the memo that i wanted it and cut it up for firewood.
I took it to a place locally and had the guy square it up leaving as much of the log intact to dry as a big piece.
I`ve got it in the shop now on 3 car dollies so i can move it out of the way when i need too (it`s farkin heavy thou).
Got the ends painted with a clear log seal and the rest slathered in boiled linseed oil, could not find raw linseed oil in time.
The plan is to let it dry out and then cut it hopefully into 2 pieces and make a sweet mantle.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Nice piece of oak you have there. How long do you figure it will take to dry and do you have a way to measure moisture content?

Boy that Jaff is like a splinter in my arse.

Don`t worry SK your sexual preferences are not in question.

As for how long to wait? I have no clue. I`ve got some research ahead of me.

God I hate how the grain runs on these pun threads... I'm usually stumped, but it's always a good time when Jab is the butt of the joke.

Eventually the puns will wane and nobody will check hopefully before it gets too warped.

Let’s not let this topic splinter the fibers of this board.
