I need better drill bits

My father bought me a set of jobber bits a few years ago. They’re fine if I don’t try drilling through anything harder than wood. I know drill bits are a case of “You get what you pay for.” But I know there are expensive junk bits out there, too. How do I tell the difference? Most sets I see only go up to 1/2”. I assume that’s because bigger than 1/2” are less commonly needed. I need something slight bigger than 1/2” right now. I’m tired of buying bits that I can’t use more than once. Any recommendations?

For the larger ones, buy as needed.  Under 1/2", I would buy THunderbits.  I have had great luck with them

Many good quality US made bit choices still out there. I can personally vouch for the Norseman brand. Great bits and they last.

I buy the bigger bits on an as needed basis. BUT even the good ones will get chewed up if they're not used right. I've got drawers full of crapped out bits due to my overzealous use of force on them. They sharpen easy enough but its never as good as new.

Bits below 1/4" in my book are consumable's and get replaced frequently.

Like said bigger then 1/2 buy a needed, a full set would be a waste.

Under 1/2 like Goodfellow said there's many choices for quality USA made. I like Norseman affordable and great quality.

Anyone have experience with Drill Hog brand bits? I use to see them at the farm show every year. They claim USA made, I think lifetime warranty and they look good.

Are you sure about that branding?

I ask, because while Drill hogs may be at shows, I have seen them online (amazon, ebay, etc) and they say Drill Hog USA, but no where do I see them as "made in the USA".

They seem to kind of spoof Bad Dog drill bits, which my father bought at a show, years ago (his best, not old stock bits), and he actually did replace one, under warranty at a show.  (and they say "made in the USA"
