My go to Truck Avalanche 2500

Knowing  that the 2006 Avalanche was the last year for the three-quarter ton 2500 model. I sold my 2002 2500 for a new 2006 model.. That was 18 model years and nearly 200,000 miles ago. I have owned over a hundred cars in my time. And this Avalanche is by far the best for my trucking needs. It has a 8.1 liter engine with an Allison four-speed automatic transmission with leaf springs in the rear and torsion bars in the front along and four-wheel drive. It's a four door with plenty of room for five passengers. The back of the rear seat fold downs and can fit a full 4' by 8' sheet of plywood. Or 12' long conduit with the tailgate shut and locked. I have loaded 3,000 pounds of steel in the box, and it just sits level. And can easily handle towing 15,000 pound trailer.. All in a package that with a length 221”.  That's like a foot shorter than a four-door model truck. Yet it has only a 5' or 6' bed. And an engine with far less towing power. They may advertise a big payload. But they are under powered for my needs.

The bad part of the Avalanche 2500 is that they are no longer produced. They get poor gas mileage,, 13 to 14 MPG on the road,, actually city not much worse. And both mine use a quart of oil every 700 miles.

I know I would be happy with what's, So I decided to spruce up the old gal over the winter. The plastic cladding was weathered. And there was rust. The work I performed would easily make the truck presentable for the next three years. No doubt I will do a more extensive job next time. Such as replacing fenders, rocker panels and paint.

Not much of the Avalanche to see. I am unloading my new Roll-in Saw off my hydraulic tilt bed trailer. The saw is about 1500 pounds is all. It's bolted to a pallet with my pallet jack under. Then lowering it down the tilted bed using the winch... easy peasy

13mpg is about average for the 2500 platforms. my 98 Gm averaged 12-13 and my 2019 F250 averages 12-13.

Cool looking rig. If there was several a cool looking TRAR it's the avalanche. The elcamino and ranchero were neat but definitely more car the truck

Avalanche sure used the 2500 chassis, from 2002 till 2006. They continued making the 1/2 ton version until 2013. There was talk that GM would bring it out every other year or so. However there are some reports that GM will Resurrect the Avalanche in 2024.. The concept looks promising. Sadly they are going to be powered by lithium batteries. There is no way I would even consider owning an EV today! Particularly in a work truck... Now if the put the old 8.1 liter in a 2500 platform. I'd be first in line to purchase it..

Truck looks nice.  i too didn't know they had a 2500.  Gotta agree, mileage is what its gonna be in a truck like that.

My son had one and liked it

cool truck. i knew there was a 3/4 ton and from what i recall, the 3/4 with the big v8 is a pretty rare bird.

i have a soft spot for those years of gm truck and those rims. i had white  1500 hd crewcab with those wheels. should have kept it.

i didn't mind the look but i am a bigger fan of the later versions that more closely resembled the regular trucks and suburbans.

Picked up my enclosed car hauler from my off premise storage building. I'll be doing some maintenance work on the trailer before hitching it to my motorhome. Then loading my 1914 Cadillac for an antique car tour followed by a show in Michigan next week..

How do you like the V8 for towing? I'm going to upgrading my truck here in a bit.

I have a Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins now. (Has the typical dodge frame rot)

I'm thinking of maybe a GM with a gas engine. I know I'm going to miss the torque of the diesel. But I don't use it everyday or every weekend so I'm thinking maybe I can get away with a gas engine.

The heaviest I usually tow is a 6000# tractor on a (guessing. Haven't dry weighed it lately) 2500# trailer.

That Cummins is worth gold Tim! I'd find a donor truck with a good frame and do a swap. It'll take time, but given the current situation with trucks, it may be well worth it.

Tim, don't know about the Chevy but I have a f250 with the 6.2 in it and it has awesome power.  Betting a late model Chevy does too.

Gasoline or Diesel powered pickup for towing, good Question. Both types of engines have their pro's and con's. I averaged 10,000 miles per year on this Avalanche over the 17 years. I'd say in my case stick with gasoline engine. Anyhow a diesel was never offered in the Avalanche. There is an upfront saving of $10,000.00 gasoline engine truck. Plus Diesel fuel costing $1.00 gallon more, that negates saving on cost per mile.

My recomendations:

If I was going to purchase a 2024 Silverado I'd purchase a 6.6 liter gasoline model..

If I was going to  purchase a F250. I'd purchase it with the Godzilla 7.3 liter gasoline engine.

If was a Ram 2500  I would bite the bullet and purchase the 6.7 Liter diesel

Knowing that my Avalanche has little rust on the frame. I'd gladly put on new Fenders etc. and drive it another 100,000 miles. Rather then fork out $70,000.00 today!

I do believe Goodfellow is on the right track. Find a nice used Ram pickup 2500, maybe from the south without rust. And swap your present Diesel the wheels off it. Or purchase a crate engine for $5,000.00 and a rebuilt transmission for another $4,000.00. And you have the perfect solution. If you have the time and wish to save a few dollars, Take on rebuilding it yourself.

The idea of a frame swap is definitely there. It's definitely the most economical thing. It's just such a daunting task it gives me anxiety. Lol

It's a lot of work and you'll end up replacing a lot of things other than just the frame (brake lines, fasteners and who knows what else that will break or not come apart)! It'll take time unfortunately I don't have a shop for it to sit in and whittle away at it.

I haven't gotten a quote but, to have a shop do it I could see it easily run $5k. At that point you still have a truck that has 200,000 miles on it with a  transmission that would cost $5000 to be built right when it fails as it will (200,000 is not bad for any trans let alone a Dodge lol)

Part of me wants to do it the other part says to start looking for a new truck (new to me)

I've been dreading making a decision. Luckily it's not a daily driver and I can take my time.
