i think goodfellow was a fan of those allied sets. some of them may have been labeled as "couger".
i suspect they may have been stanley sourced.

Yes indeed Harlan, I'm a big fan of those sets, and I think you're dead-on with the Cougar connection. I think they sourced the Cougar line from Stanley and Danaher at some point in time.

Cougar was absolutely Wright brand. I bought a 1/4 set from HE for my pop in the 1990's. The set is in the clutter that is my shop now.

The Cougar set I bought dad in the 1990's was in a box that looked just like that and the tools are first rate. The only difference I can see is the set I bought pop has no plastic liner, it just had the little metal fence that hold the sockets captive then the other side for all the drive tools.

I missed out on one of those 3/8 cougar sets on Ebay a few months back.
I saw these allied sets on HJE recently , but I passed because the ratchet looks identical to the Stanley sourced JS technologies set I already have.

I picked up one of those Cougar 3/8" SAE sets many years ago as well, to add the ratchet to the obsess... er, "collection". Unfortunately the ratchet itself doesn't have a USA COO stamped on it (a rather critical requirement to keep in the collection, with only a couple very specific exceptions), so out of the drawers it came. The set gives off a strong Stanley vibe to me as well, which also causes me to question the actual COO of the ratchet considering Stanley's checkered past with the FTC.
Interesting that the ratchet in the Wright Allied set has a USA COO stamp but no brand stamp. And the ratchet reeks of Stanley too. Back in the day there was TAT (Thorsen Allied Tools) which were very clearly imports.

Btw Cougar pro is the current budget line from WRIGHT, and it's the exact same logo.
The cougar stuff is absolutely WRIGHT.

Apparently some of them like the W.A.T Stanley round heads were also only marked USA ( these are still readily available NOS online it seems )

That's the pearhead ratchet in my set, but mine is marked Cougar with no COO. Hopefully quality/longevity of the tools isn't as random as what's put in the sets....

I probably wasn't clear, I was saying you can get a USA stamped version of the ratchet from your set if you want.

I can't speak for newer Cougar tools, but those of 25-30 years ago were very good quality.

They're made in Taiwan and it seems most Taiwanese hand tools these days are at the very least decent, but I couldn't say just how good they might be.
Personally I'm buying WRIGHT for their American made tools and would just go to HF if I wanted imports.

You 'n me both (the anal retentive part...), that's what struck me as odd about my Cougar set, only stated USA on the box and not stamped on any of the tools inside (the box+ is now buried in the garage in another larger box not likely to see the light of day until I'm long gone and someone else empties it out...). After the multiple Stanley and earlier National Hand Tools antics with COO I'm extremely skeptical of non-stamped tools for actual COO despite what a box lid/wrapper might claim.

My rule of thumb is, if it isn't stamped USA, it isn't USA made
I am sure there are exceptions though

My Cougar sets that I purchased for my BILs were all stamped US on the sockets and ratchet, while the box had a sticker on the inside indicating that it was made in Taiwan.
