Proto Saltus Wrenches
« on: August 29, 2018, 06:18:30 PM »
Found these at a garage sale earlier this year. Not a full set, but walked away with these and $12 dollars lighter.

Nice! I have a mutt set of Saltus wrenches going. (Bonney, SK, Proto, Mac, Truecraft, Williams)

Been at least a year since I finished the set and haven't used one once yet. Figured I'd try the mix and match set - if they worked well I'd spring for a nice name brand group. I guess that ain't happening.

Though, if a Bonney set became available I'd probably grab it on principle. ;)

I've got a few of the saltus style. I like them for certain things. Each chainsaw box has a saltus in it for chain adjustments. No Protos tho. And yeah you stole those. ;D

I love Saltus wrenches and would buy Proto all day long for $3 each, heck of a deal. I have a mutt set of SnapOn, MAC and others. I use the 10mm and 1/2 on battery terminal clamps.

What sizes are your, Cruiser? I have two Protos in 11/16 and 9/16. If you need those sizes for your set, let me know. I'm not married to them.

Wow....a 7/8" version. I've not seen them larger than 3/4" before. I have only 2 in metric, but I'll buy everyone I can get my hands on. I did recently pick up a set of MAC Sabina OH ones the other day. Do they get used? Nope, not a single time, but there is always hope.

I've always liked the Saltus wrenches.

I rarely see them in any brand and never for 3 a copy.
People who confuse etymology and entomology bug me in ways I can’t put into words.

Geez! What the heck needed a nut that big...and then buried it so only a Saltus wrench could reach it? :-[

Hi Bonneyman - the sizes range from 11/16 to 7/8. So far, I’ve only found a need for the 3/4 and 13/16.

I bought a set of Challenger saltus wrenches probably thirty years ago and have never reached for any of them enough to ever use every size. Cool wrenches, glad I have them, don't know why, toolbox bling?

I would have thought I would use them, just too used to grabbing DBE wrenches I guess, then later gearwrenches.

+1 on that UB. But they were Protos and I couldn't walk away from them. For some reason, I really like Proto stuff.

Here is my mutt set cobbled together over the years. It runs from 3/8 to 3/4 but somehow I have ended up with three 1/2 wrenches of different brands.
The 3/8 is Proto then in order, Taiwan, Mastercraft, MAC, SnapOn, 2 Craftsman, MAC and S-K Tools.
The metrics are all Truecraft, 10, 11, 13 and have held up very well. I see more SAE Saltus than MM as I have not seen another used MM in the 25 years that I have had the Truecrafts.

Funny, back in the day, saltus wrenches were catalog order only from Sears. Also, I know they never appeared ever in the Craftsman tool catalog in metric, EVER! I know that for an absolute fact. (The catalog part AFAIK) now perhaps they were in the store in Chicago, that I would believe. Around 1988 I visited Chicago and wound up in a Sears store downtown. I was amazed at the tools I saw in that Sears that I had never seen in my local KCMO stores of the time. They had ALL the cool stuff there I assume because it was the corporate location.

Gang,

I've got a mixed brand SAE saltus wrench set.  I use them mainly for repair & maintenance of power yard equipment.  I have a wooden tote with saltus wrenches, a couple of screwdrivers, two chain saw multi tools, 2-stroke fuel mix, chain oil, starter fluid, spare spark plugs, air filters, baling wire, and trimmer line.  I used to keep this tote on my pickup all the time when I was in the landscape business.  Now, I just bring it out of the garage and take it to wherever I'm working in my yard.  I think of it as my yard equipment first-aid kit. ;D
When my wife leaves me, my dog dies, and they repossess my home, I'll still have my tools.
