Show your garage --
« on: October 25, 2018, 01:47:40 PM »
We had some fun with this thread on the previous version of the GG

I have a small two-car garage, approx 860sf and and it's good enough to do most of my wrenching and welding. Thank goodness I also have a small heated detached machine shop next to this garage for machining and electronic repair work.

It looks better at night -- less dust and dirt to see in the pics -- LOL  :))

dayum.  I approve.   I am trying to make my garage into something similar.  I have two awesome 8' workbenches that I built (see thread somewhere on this site lol, I forget where I posted it) and one 4' workbench.  need to get some of the rest of the garage organized.   I would love that scissor lift  that you have..

GF has a very nice, well equipped shop that is quite organized.  What is surprising is that he lives at the end of a cul de sac in suburbia and you would never think to find a shop like that there.  I can only imagine what he would do with 2,000 sq ft of shop with high ceilings and a couple of acres of buffer around him,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,oh the projects he could do 8)

This is more of a "Show your garage at night" photo, but it does a great job of hiding the mess within  :)  This was a couple nights ago.

My Garage,  back during construction in 2013.   Has walls now, and some,,,,, well, lots of stuff in there.  Two cars, extra engines, 3 tool boxes, air compressor,  enough room to walk between if you are coordinated. Yes, has doors now too.   Photo taken last year,  should have a concrete apron on it, but darnit, real life intruded again.

How is the jaq coming?

Moving forward -- thanks for asking Walrus. The car is at a local specialty shop to get the electricals double checked. I had a problem with the aftermarket wiring harness blowing fuses. I chased that wiring harness through every circuit and could not find the cause. Rather than spending the time and drive myself crazy I sent it to a Jag specialist to find the cause and to install the aftermarket Petronix electronic ignition. Only problem is that they are so backed up that I won't have it back to until late Nov. at the earliest. Also still trying to find an upholsterer to do the interior, but the few that have done these Jaguar specialty interiors are few and far between in this area. It's like interviewing for a 9-5 job.

The complete interior cost around $4500 and the install will most likely cost another $1500-2000 -- there goes my Christmas money  :)) :)) :))

Until that time I'm working on installing the wiring harness and the lower valance in the bonnet. The bonnet and valance has been sitting patiently in my basement for three years. Time to get it to the ready stage. I'll take some pics next time I'm working on the bonnet.

Cheers!

Will show the best part of my shop/garage in the attached photos.  Will show more later, has a large semi-clean work room and an additional three bays for a total of about 3000 square feet.  Here is the best part.

Been there -- done that! I worked out of a 1 car townhouse garage for almost seven years and it was a similar issue. When an extended project came along, the garage needed to be cleared into the driveway, and only then could the work begin.

We are working on the front end and a trans overhaul on the particular Suburban. Putting new ball joints in and it got a new caliper and new brake hoses. The other suburban is already out there along with a cavalier, and My black Buick. The city gets kinda adversarial with not running untagged vehicles sitting in the driveway so I try to keep things moving.

Cars as money pits ......?....... I guess for some, the rest of us cannot wipe the smile off our silly faces. It is not a hobby for everyone I can tell you that. The hobby requires lots of common sense and the ability to solve problems.

A check book car builder would feel like they are a money pit, and I get that.

Bolts right on is an industry inside joke .......

Got plenty of money pits sitting around here.  Living way in the country without neighbors that could complain has its good points.   In fact don't know how some of you manage with an urban garage.  I have more issues with wind and weather than regulations, neighbors, and snoopy kids..  HOA?   Couldn't believe when I first heard about one of those.

In most Florida cities/towns vehicles without a current plate can be hauled away after notification.  Here in the Missouri Ozarks there are no zoning rules in the counties so storing outside without a plate is no problem.  Also to blow your mind, building permits are free, no impact fees, no perk tests on 3 to 10 acres or more and no inspections in the counties (do them yourself or have it done, or don't do it at all if you want to live dangerously.  Many reasons to get the hell out of Florida and I did after living there 59 years.

I am with you on that.

And CCRs run a close second to HOAs as they can still limit your ability to do as you please on your property. Being zoned rural agriculture has great benefits as the county really only controls building permits and such.

OK, what is a CCR.  First google listing came up as Credence Clearwater Revival,,,,,,,,,,,pretty sure that isn't what you meant :))

Then I found this list of over 100 choices  https://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/CCR

Phil -- I think the term references a set of community bylaws; which are often referred to as Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CCRs)

I lived in a duplex in a development with a HOA controlled by a bunch of stay at home mommies and nosy old women. Needles to say I was not there favorite resident after I told the president of the HOA to go smoke a turd in hell  :))

They really should have an assessment test for folks who are thinking of buying into a neighborhood with a HOA as to whether they would fit or not.  I am sure I would fail :))

I failed two houses ago... that's why we bought this house in this neighborhood; NO DAMN HOA!!!!

Highland is right! My former HOA was controlled by a mob of middle aged, self important, Femi-Nazi busybodies, that made it their business to stick their noses into everyone else's business. I caught one of these miscreants climbing over my fence to snoop in our yard and shed. The irony is that had she injured herself in the process, she probably would have sued me for her injuries.

I had an aunt and uncle, he worked for Goddard Space Center and she was an executive secretary at Westinghouse I believe.  They had no children and made big money.  They built a large house on 3 acres in a big money development, wooded, by a reservoir.  They loved the covenants to keep up the property values.  They were great people but could be a bit snooty

I used to work with a mechanic who loved living in an HOA/CCR area. He always said he didn't want people leaving junk cars everywhere, ruining his property value. I also knew a guy in trade school who came in one day bitching he got another fine from the HOA for parking on the lawn.

Then again, I live in a historic neighborhood which is just as onerous at times, and I don't mind.

HOA's .....:D...... only a fool pays $$$ to a group of clowns to be told how to live on his private property

Shopping for my home, when asked what  I was looking. Two things required, east/west exposure and no HOA, the rest to be disused when  seen.

Do I see a steel beam in the ceiling?  Great place for a chain fall mounting.

Yup, it's 14" tall and 6 3/4" wide - quite substantial.

I've been on the lookout for a good USA-made trolley and chain fall for years, not too much out there.
