Trailer winch issues
« on: November 18, 2018, 10:26:47 PM »
So in just bought a new Smittybilt x20 10,000 lb winch and after unboxing it everything in me says stop return it. What a cheap piece of crap. Should have known bloody chinese crap.
So maybe a used Warn 8274 or a new Warn but even Warn winches have chinese motors in them.
I need to chat with a 8274 winch expert .I'm open to ideas.
The intended use is a car trailer winch.
Is the need enough? Or does the want suffice?

Darn I wish you'd posted this earlier. There was a fair deal on an 8274 by the front doors of the big building at the swap.

Look at tow truck equip for quality stuff. Pierce is industrial stuff. https://www.piercearrowinc.com/

I would have thought a 8274 is too quick for a trailer winch where you want to be able to inch something onto a trailer.

This is my 8274 - twin 9hp motors off a Warn 9.5XP, widened drum, in-drum free spool and 300' of 1/2" synthetic rope.

edit: Just pulled my spare Warn 9hp motor out of the cupboard - Country of Origin is Brazil.

Ditto on the speed, although if you two part it with a snatch it should be OK.

The worm drive wrecker units are nice and slow and hold a load without worrying about the brake, but make sure they have a clutch to pull the line off or you'll be there all day running the drum in reverse.

Rural, That's a sweet set up with the double motors!

Well the gods smiled on me today.
Went to pick up this nos  TMax 12500 lb winch today for 400, never been used, great country of origin, build in an era where steel ruled not plastic .
The guy gave me another one that's been used twice for free.
As we say down under you bloody bonza mate!

So could I test out the winch using a battery charger?
I don`t have a good spare battery on hand.

You need amps to run those things. Some jumper cables would put you in a better position than a batt charger. Pop that hood open and hook 'em up.
