I'm thinking of going to an estate sale tomorrow, The only thing I'm interested in is the vise in the pic. Any idea of the maker from this pic ?
-
No telling the brand for me. That said I do think it is one of the good old ones and not a chicom POS. I would go if you are looking for a good old heavy one. That one shows promise. If I was going to guess I would guess a Reed.

Athol/Starrett

Athol/Starrett
2nd'd. The swivel lock lever is the give away. No one else used that style.

That, and the YUGE jaw support :D
Good luck grabbing it Ken, I think Starrett/Athol are one of the best there are. I got a cute little Starrett 3" fixed base no 923 at a flea market for $10, and it is a serious little vise! I also have a Reed no. 23-1/2 utility vise similar in size, but swivel base...the Starrett weighs 1.5 times as much as the Reed. Starrett opens about 3.75" as it can hold 2x4 laid flat, it's a decent substitute for a c-clamp tbh, lol.

What would be a good price to pay for this ?

Depends on if you want it or want to flip it.
-
I would grab that for the right price but who know what that price is?
Here is my 4-1/2" jaw Starrett. I bought this one about 12 years ago from Rutland Tool. When Starrett quit offering them Rutland wanted this one out of their showroom and I was happy to oblige for a cheap price. It is a darker blue than the picture looks.
-
Now that you showed that picture of the Starrett vise there is no mistaking the lineage of the vise in the original picture!
-
Depending on condition, I would have it priced between $80 to $100 or so in my showroom
-
I got the vise. Are there 2 swivel locks on these or one ? The one I picked up has 2 holes , but 1 lock. The other pic shoes a plug in one hole.
-
Mine has one only, like Deadnutz's. Plugged hole on the left side.

So are you gonna use it or garage journal it?
-
I'm not going to GJ it. I'm still deciding what I'm going to do with it.
-
Cool, that is a 924-!/2 just like mine but a little older. Glad you got it.
Oops, just realized that is a pic of Greyson's vise. ::)
-
I'll post a few pics tonight. It's raining sideways outside right now. I don't feel like getting wet right now.
Here are some pics. I noticed that the one jaw is a smooth replacement. This thing is really heavy too. I had to carry it from the basement and over a block to my car.
-
a couple more pics.
-
That vise is in very nice shape. Too bad it doesn't have both serrated jaws but still worth keeping.
-
Nice grab for sure.
This guy makes grade A stuff. $80 for jaws probably blows the budget.

And the best part is I got it for $ 24.00 + tax.
-
That's a total YOU SUCK price. Fix that baby up and enjoy it for the rest of you life.
I paid $100 for mine from a friend, and it's missing the jaws.
