Lots of us have grinders with a wheel dressing tool. I wonder how many actually know how to use the thing....

I've found I did not....

If you are talking about the handheld star wheel dresser most people don't know how to use them. Back off the tool rest so the two feet or protrusions on the bottom of the dresser hook on the tool rest but not touching the wheel while held horizontal. You then lift the handle until the dresser makes contact with the wheel and move it across the face of the wheel. If you freehand the dresser without hooking it you will not get a trued wheel. Re-adjust the tool rest when done. If the tool rest has been ground down by the grinding wheel and is not flat this won't work as the dresser feet must move across a flat surface.

Face shield and dust mask are a must as you don't want to breathe the dust or eat a chunk of wheel if it fails.

I have a diamond wheel dresser that cuts the wheel faster than you would believe . But , I have to free hand it. It takes a bit of practice.

I used a single point diamond dresser on the surface grinder but it was in a holder on the mag chuck. You can't really freehand a surface grinding wheel for a true wheel and good finish. Our Blanchard grinder had a built in star dresser you could swing across the cylindrical wheel face.

Thanks pep for posting that fine illustration of what I was talking about. It does leave out the all important dust mask though. I have never seen a Desmond wheel dresser come with detailed instructions but it has been years since I bought mine. I used to buy replacement dresser parts by the box.

No exaggeration my former boss, the troll, would not replace it. He'd use it till there was nothing to use then grouse about how expensive they are and how he is buying them all the time. The wire brush on the other side I've seen him put worn way beyond that on as replacements.
